SEX*DEATH*MAGIC: RENAISSANCE POETRY UNBOUND at Vertical Aerial Dance Studio, 27 Moray Place
reviewed by Robbie Ellis 21 Mar 2012
A most diverting entertainment indeed
This isn’t the first time a company has cobbled together a collection of the English Renaissance’s greatest hits – poetic, theatrical and musical – and it won’t be the last either. This one grabs hold of the spirit of the time, reusing and borrowing material for a slice of the golden age that doesn’t outstay its welcome. [more]

Murder as an aphrodisiac: a good premise for black comedy. [more]

SEX, LIES AND IMPROVISE at The Drake, Freeman's Bay

Unclenching the corporates by teamwork
They have you before you’ve even had a chance to cement your cynical evening entertainment expression. There’s a floor manager called Randy asking if you are too, and handing you questionnaires to fill out, saying things like: “What’s the naughtiest place you’ve ever done it?” [more]

SEXUAL PERVERSITY IN CHICAGO at San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba St
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 20 Aug 2007
Auspicious start for new company
Written in 1974, Sexual Perversity in Chicago is an early David Mamet play that exhibits most of the traits of his characteristic style and themes for which he later became famous: short, sharp scenes, dominating roles for men, strong language, and a critique of American society. [more]

The seventies revisited
This production of Mamet’s 1970s classic is an assured start for new independent co-operative Deaf Chic. Attractively marketed and presented, it has all the bite and punch required to attract a new, younger audience. For a night of crisp, snappy dialogue performed with skill and confidence, it’s a very cheap option too. [more]

Impressive if a little dated
The dim lighting, bar setting and music evoke a moody kind of sexiness that is the perfect backdrop for a play about 1970s sexual politics. It is obvious that the design team and director have thought carefully about the use of the space ... [more]

SEXUAL PERVERSITY IN CHICAGO at Musgrove Studio, Maidment Theatre

Joyful pace and chemistry
Bernard Litko (Charles Louwrens) is an arrogant, tale-telling, oil-slick of a man. As we settle into our seats, he shares a story of sexual misadventure with his best friend Danny Shapiro in 1970’s Chicago. The pace and chemistry between these two is a joy... [more]

Called to the bar for some fine, lively sparring
Wry humour and great character studies make life-affirming show A basement bar in Karangahape Rd provides an appropriate venue for a highly original variation on the classic ‘man walks into a bar’ scenario. [more]

Enlightenment at the bar
So a Buddhist walks into a bar . . . It sounds like the start of a joke but is in fact the point when this play gets really interesting. [more]

SHADOWS OF CARE at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe (John Smythe: theatre reviews) 17 Feb 2006
The lightness and darkness of love
What makes the Shadows of Care double-bill worth watching is the alacrity with which both productions use their craft to distil emotional truth and expose light and dark parts of the human condition. [more]
