FIRST LAUGHS - WELLINGTON at Opera House
reviewed by Hannah Smith 4 May 2009
Like a good antipasto
The Wellington leg of the New Zealand International Comedy Festival is off to a rollicking start after the opening event First Laughs held at the Opera House on Sunday night. A nigh on full house was treated to snippets of comedic pleasure from an assortment of festival acts ... [more]

SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER at Maidment
reviewed by Paul Simei-Barton (New Zealand Herald) 4 May 2009
Passions of youth swing to late ’50s styles and sounds
Michael Hurst's high-spirited modernisation has a freshness and vitality that should make the classic story of mistaken identity accessible to a younger audience. The play's multiple layers of dissimulation – with ironical asides pitched directly at the audience – creates a distinctly post-modern texture. [more]

CARNIVAL HOUND at The Print Factory, 35 Kings St, Newtown -
reviewed by Kristian Larsen (Yelling Mouth) 4 May 2009
Impressionistic reverie
In my (predictably) forthright opinion this show is a technical, theatrical, collaborative, and personal breakthrough for choreographer Maria Dabrowska. [more]

CADBURY CRUNCHIE COMEDY GALA at ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre
reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 3 May 2009
From brilliantly topical to wildly different
The 2009 NZ International Comedy Festival’s 24 Gala acts and comedians deliver a lively capacity crowd the full range of comic experiences, from side-splitting brilliance to a bizarre unfathomable calamity, with many reasonably good routines in between. [more]

JARRED FELL IN: MAYHEM OF MAGIC at Limelight Lounge, Aotea Centre
reviewed by Andra Jenkin 3 May 2009
Grossly side-splitting
The magical mayhem of Jarred Fell is comedy influenced by the tradition of geek magic. Lots of gore and decapitation and needles and bloodied animal parts. Completely unaware of this, I took my mum. She liked the bit when the heart started bleeding the best. [more]

BENJAMIN CRELLIN’S: APOCALYPSE SOON! at Comedy Underground, 305 Queen St
reviewed by James Amos 3 May 2009
Self-effacing, confident and shameless
This stuff is stand up comedy gold because its so funny, yet makes a point as well. Crellin’s delivery is relaxed and he is so at home on stage, quipping with the audience seamlessly, he's clearly a seasoned pro. [more]

JAMES NOKISE – THE ADVENTURES OF JIMI SAMOA at Comedy Underground, 305 Queen St
reviewed by Venus Stephens 3 May 2009
Elixir for life comedy
The hour long gig starts with a ‘curtained intro’, by that I mean James stands behind the stage curtain, introduces himself and then steps out to the enthused applause of us, his audience. He has an affable rapport and extends the intimacy of the venue to relaxed chat with the punters which he revisits, thus involving you in his stories. [more]

DIANE SPENCER: TAM POMPOM at Comedy Underground, 305 Queen St
reviewed by James Amos 3 May 2009
Bold and subtle
Good old fashioned British comedy – full of wit, charm, and filth! ... Spencer has charm like a light bulb, it brightens the stage - she's a real joy to watch - both bold and subtle at once, which reveals real confidence. [more]

THE RISE AND FALL OF THE CONSTRUCTACONS at Limelight Lounge, Aotea Centre
reviewed by Nik Smythe 3 May 2009
Edge-skating experimentation
Opening support act is Gish, irascible hard case bro from the waybacks. Impressively unphased by the size of the audience – about ten of us, which could be cause for embarrassed tension – his infectious natural humour instead relaxes us quickly. [more]

THE KRANSKY SISTERS at Comedy Chamber, Town Hall, THE EDGE
reviewed by Sian Robertson 3 May 2009
Creepy trio
The musical Kransky Sisters aren’t your usual recipe for a knee-slapping comedy show. The attraction is in their understated, unsettling performances and the sense created by a flawless adherence to their oddly naïve characters that perhaps these women aren’t acting at all. [more]
