SHORT+SWEET THEATRE, AUCKLAND 2012 at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge
reviewed by Janet McAllister (New Zealand Herald) 20 Sep 2012
Fun, wit, drama all tied up in small packages
Now in its third year, the Short+Sweet entry-level theatre competition has expanded to nearly 50 short plays over three weeks. It's pleasing to see a healthy proportion of emerging New Zealand playwrights included in this first-week season of nine plays, and while the acting and directing is uneven, the constant show-changing - with suitable theme-supporting music - keeps things fresh. 2012 Top 30 – Week 3
It is the third week, of the third year of the Short+Sweet Theatre Festival in Auckland. Since its arrival at The Herald in 2010, the ten minute play festival has been firmly embraced by the Auckland Theatre community – emerging and experienced – and has gone from strength to strength. [more]

Short, but Sweet???
Death, murder and suicide seemed to dominate the themes for Week 1 of Short + Sweet 2012. To be honest I could have done with a little more levity and a little less gravity. [more]

Gala Final
Three weeks of hard work has culminated in this and the quality of the plays presented at this year’s Short + Sweet’s Gala Final is a testament to its ability to attract this country’s top and up-and-coming theatrical talent. Organizing such a mammoth production is not an easy task, so congratulations to everybody involved for another successful season. [more]

Theatre that engages the intellect a pleasure
Shorts is a production of Theatre Comrades, a Hawkes Bay based Theatre Company headed by Megan Peacock and Sally Richards. Peacock and Richards’ goal is to foster local and emerging performers, but to also bring quality drama to the provincial stage. [more]

Interesting, challenging, engaging and entertaining
Theatre in the provinces is often a mixed bag – we get well financed shows (ballet; comedians; tribute acts) but see less of the 'art' of theatre or the experimental theatre than larger centres because of our small populations. SHOULD WE STAY OR SHOULD WE GO? at BATS

Huge fun with a genuine purpose
The claim that theatre can change lives has often been dismissed as an idealistic dream but Should We Stay or Should We Go may well achieve just that, not for the audiences but for its creator/ actors. Their destiny is in our hands. [more]

A fun show
With verve and plenty of good humour and some easy-going audience participation – and a spat or two as well as full-blown fight with a squashy banana – the pair present their cases. [more]

‘Avin’ a laff with universally personal shtick
Nisha Madhan and Alexa Wilson introduce eachother (several times over) with various praiseworthy acknowledgments such as "multi-award-winning choreographer" (Wilson) and "former Shortland Street sweetheart" (Madhan), or my personal favourite: "My former flatmate, my future wife." [more]
