AU BON MORT VIVANT: DEAD SEXY CABARET at Rose Centre Belmont
reviewed by Lexie Matheson 5 Mar 2011
Circus burlesque unadulterated fun
Au Bon Mort-Vivant features ‘wickedness, curious creatures and things that go bump (and grind) in the night …’ or so the press release would have us believe. Potential attendees get in on the act too, being invited to ‘get dressed up, and join us at our dark burlesque circus: a night of monstrous revelry, sensuous sirens, capering loonies and evil laughs …’ [more]

AU REVOIR BY WHITIREIA PERFORMING ARTS at Whitireia Performance Centre, 25-27 Vivian Street
reviewed by Jennifer Shennan (Dominion Post) 18 Jun 2012
Works a triumph of movement and costuming
These are 1st, 2nd and 3rd year students in the Performing Arts degree course, but have all the aplomb and confidence of a seasoned professional troupe. Live music of drumming and vocals are as good as you’ll get. It’s heartening to witness the integration of these arts, never torn apart before so don’t have to be re-assembled now. Lucky young citizens, and they know it. [more]

AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY at Maidment

One helluva ride
I love a good allegory. But part way through August: Osage County I stop looking for it. There is so much happening as the Weston family deconstructs itself I cannot help but get drawn into the dirty washing and deep rinse cycles of their soap-opera … Then suddenly spun high and dry, the allegory comes clean, prompting much discussion afterwards. I love a play that does that to you. [more]

A mesmerising ‘train wreck’ of epic and comic proportions
It is fascinating be in a theatre foyer alive with the smiling, excited faces of an audience who have just witnessed – over three-and-a-half hours (including 2 intervals) – the inexorable decimation of the Weston family. [more]

Tour de force at Circa
Before you get distracted from reading this review – SEE THIS PLAY! Or else! The ‘or else’ being that you will miss out on a tour de force (I’ve always wanted to have a reason to use that phrase). [more]

Powerful drama deserves its standing ovation
It is not often that a Circa Theatre production receives a standing ovation on opening night but that was the case on Saturday with Susan Wilson’s production of award winning American playwright Tracy Letts play August: Osage County. And deservedly so. [more]

The impassioned rage of foiled love
Colin McColl’s visionary direction of Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer prize winning script, as performed by his stellar cast in this NZ debut, carries us through three and a quarter hours of harrowing comedic drama to a standing ovation and leaves the audience buzzing with excitement. [more]

AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY at Court Theatre, Bernard Street, Addington

Adversarial revelations
The play builds steadily, as raw emotions are unleashed to several scenes of shocking intensity. Never short of crisp one liners, each scene contributes to the overall jigsaw, layering character and implication in a neat progression. What at first sight seems a vast set (from the meticulous design of Mark McEntyre) resonates with 'adversarial' revelations. [more]

Intoxicating family cocktail
Suicide, sex abuse, drugs: dysfunctional clan gets to deal with all modern ills Touted as the future of American theatre, Tracy Letts' play has been an international sensation since its Chicago opening in 2007. It arrives on the Auckland stage with an enormous burden of expectation but more than lives up to the hype with a production that is hugely entertaining and emotionally riveting. [more]

AUNTIE & ME at Opera House

Dire
Can this really be the same play Peter Hawes called “one of the great existential plays”, and John Ross called “a prodigiously clever black comedy, with moments of farce”, when they reviewed Centrepoint Theatre’s 2008 production ...? [more]
