ODDFELLOWS Comedy Festival JANEY GODLEY IN GOOD GODLEY (AK) at Silo Theatre reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 31 May 2006 |
Mirth in murky depths She’s tough, coarse, and rude - but fair, and damn funny. Scotland’s Janey Godley is a survivor, with a twinkle in her eye and wit to match. [more] |

ODDFELLOWS Comedy Festival THE 4 NOELS IN THE MAGNIFICENT 17 at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 31 May 2006 |
Crack up showdown at high noon Ah, the antics of James, John and Jesse: 3 multi-talented actor-singer-musician-sort-of-dancers, whose self devised show, The Magnificent Seventeen, left us crying for more. [more] |
![]() LINDAUER COMEDY DIVAS - MAY 22 at Comedy Chamber, Town Hall, THE EDGE reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe & Companion 22 May 2006 |
A review of two halves: hers & his A full house, mainly of females, were treated to great comedy, with stand out performances from Justine Smith and Irene Pink, some promising material from the new girls, all brilliantly hosted by the ubiquitous first lady of NZ comedy, Michele A‘Court. [more] |
![]() CORNERSHOP CONFESSIONS at Maidment reviewed by Nik Smythe 9 Oct 2008 |
Amusingly pointed The premise is daringly predictable: a migrant Indian family dealing with their children coming of age, with as many stereotypical race/gender/age gags as you might expect. An effective set design ... strong audio and visual effects ... and above all a versatile and spirited performance from Tarun Mohanbhai, also writer and producer, combine to make Cornershop Confessions a worthwhile watch. THE SEEDS OF LOVE at BATS reviewed by John Smythe 5 Sep 2006 |
All senses engaged The work of Juliet Shelley and Annabel Reader is as much about where they are and what all their senses are experiencing as what they are physically doing – a process Shelley (director of MmmDance) describes as “coming to my senses … out of my head.” [more] |
![]() BEAUTIFUL CITY at BATS reviewed by John Smythe 8 Sep 2006 |
Prosaic abstractions The idea of a sound and movement work based on the dynamics of city life is a fairly basic dance and drama class exercise, so when talents who have graduated from that stage explore such territory it’s reasonable to expect something different and exceptional. [more] |

Dancing the decades Fortunately this fusion performing arts event does not produce confusion: quite the opposite. Combining strong skills, three dancers, two improvisers, one actor and a singer/ musician ... blend and separate variously to dish up a happy hour of jaunty entertainment that tracks the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s. Well worth watching They claim to be actors anti-dancing but their physical prowess needs no excuse. Watch This Space is full of pleasurable surprises. [more] |

FOOTBALLISTIC at BATS reviewed by John Smythe 11 Sep 2007 |
It's a riot Coming to a Tui billboard near you: “We are not trying to glamorise violence” – Yeah, right. To be fair, it’s the illusion of violence that Footballistic trades on, and when it’s live on stage that’s a whole lot more impressive than big – or even little – screen fight sequences with all their post-production enhancements. These guys (9m, 2f) put their faith in each other and themselves on the line before our very eyes, so it really is their skill in not hurting each other that has us whooping with delight. [more] |

True emotions make dance accessible Sneaky trick, cooking up an aromatic stir-fry as we settle in for a 6.30 show. The young couple in domestic bliss, taking sensuous pleasure in moving round each other in the cramped galley kitchen, will become known to us as Anna and Greg. A bench becomes their bed and again the close quarters give rise to intimate entwinings ... Meanwhile a single woman, Lauren, has a power chat on her mobile about desirable real estate. [more] |
