SIMON MCKINNEY TELLS A BIT OF A YARN at The Transmission Room
reviewed by Venus Stephens 20 May 2009
Euphoria-inducing
Simon Mc Kinney has had me laughing for the past hour. I’ve chosen to sit in awkward spot behind a tall person and now I find myself ‘playing peek- a- boo’ trying to see where Mc Kinney is on stage. I am engrossed. [more]

SIMON MCKINNEY TELLS A BIT OF A YARN at Fringe Bar, Cnr Cuba & Vivian
reviewed by Hannah Smith 7 May 2009
A polished pleasure to watch, (but) no risk
McKinney’s tale chiefly consists of his experiences on his OE, a lone New Zealander adrift in the British Isles. This framework gives McKinney ample opportunity to utilise his prime talent, an uncanny gift for voices and mimicry. [more]

SIMON MCKINNEY: LAND OF THE LONG WHITE CLOWN at The Classic Studio
reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 1 May 2008
Intelligent gem
Simon McKinney is a really nice, polite guy – like the ‘boy next door’ you know Mum & Dad would love to meet. But can nice & polite be funny? Oh yes. [more]

SIMON MCKINNEY: LAND OF THE LONG WHITE CLOWN at San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba St
reviewed by Patrick Davies 28 Apr 2008
From impressive to genius
McKinney is best known for his ‘funny voices’ which he uses with great skill to bring to the stage a range of characters and experiences, from over made-up aggressive old people to an hilarious sequence called ‘Parents of the Caribbean’. [more]

SIMON MCKINNEY: MY TIME AS A TALKING FISH at Polson Higgs Comedy Club, XII Below Bar
reviewed by Sharon Matthews 26 Mar 2010
Warm, amusing, likeable
I am always prepared to like a comedian who has made a living from voicing a cartoon fish called Hamish. Simon McKinney didn’t disappoint me; the man is, in a word, cute. If he was a puppy, he would be a golden Labrador. Blonde, energetic, likeable, and would probably wee on your shoes. [more]

SIMON MCKINNEY: MY TIME AS A TALKING FISH at The Garden Club, 13b Dixon Street
reviewed by Priyanka Bhonsule (Hutt News) 28 Apr 2010
Highly engaging
His uncanny ability to pin down the voices and accents of nearly everyone make him accessible – McKinney could be your grandma, your dad, your four-year-old niece or that stewardess you saw on an Air New Zealand flight. The rapid switching between these characters is also impressive. [more]

Simplicity itself

SINARELLA at Mangere Arts Centre
reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 12 Apr 2012
Singing takes top honours
Sinarella’s cast is big, bright and brimming with vibrancy. Musical Director Tama Waipara’s inspirational musicianship and joyful score is something to be celebrated. This young and hungry cast and chorus, made up of 25 students from Pacific Institute of Performing Arts (PIPA) – who all possess great sets of lungs and natural rhythm and vibe – do exactly that. Pantomime done Pacific Island style is bright and tight
Last year's Polly Hood in Mumu Land put da hood into Red Riding Hood; this year, the same collaborators – Auckland Theatre Company and the Pacific Institute of Performing Arts – are putting Cinderella into the Southside. [more]

Strong performances admirably lit
In Sincerely, Yours Derek Flores joins forces with Rebecca De Unamuno in a two person improvised love story that is one part funny, one part bitter and two parts sweet. [more]
