Finally finds its heartbeat The sheer volume of the actress (Morgana O’Reilly) tackling the various roles is completely over-whelming, making me want to plug my ears. That may well be the intention, for as the argument between pregnant sister ‘Louise’ and snuffling younger brother ‘Nathan’ eventually fades, we finally meet their mother (with her hands over her ears). ![]() TAONGA: DUST, WATER, WIND at SKYCITY Theatre reviewed by Cat Gwynne 13 Mar 2009 |
From family dinner to cultural romanticism and exoticism Rona (Pare Randall) is positioned centre stage, alone. Her face – light and young – pierces through the vast and empty darkness. She dances in duet with her spirit (Dolina Wehipeihana) to the sound of grating stones (Richard Nunns). [more] |
![]() THE ARRIVAL at The Civic – THE EDGE® reviewed by Nik Smythe 13 Mar 2009 |
Enchanting tale of heartening optimism ... but one of the key advantages of this production is its ability to transcend language barriers. With precious little English spoken, and the remaining scant dialogue being what I believe is a fictional alien tongue, this work has good travel credentials. Not least due to the grand, expansive, enchanting, hypnotic spectacle that it is. [more] |
![]() THE OFFICIAL ‘PERCEIVING MURDER’ TOUR at Meet at The Basement/end at St Kevin's Arcade reviewed by James Amos 12 Mar 2009 |
Outdoors, fringy and fun Stymied by Auckland's traffic, we are lucky the show is starting a little late as we rush down Myers Park to the Basement end. It’s almost as though they sensed we were coming and delayed the performance accordingly … [more] |

Sex and sexiness v love and beauty Adolescence is an emotional roller coaster at the best of times but when a young woman’s mother dies and her father’s emotional dependency makes him tell her she’s ugly in order to keep her at home, the result is not pretty. It’s quite funny, though, except when it’s tragic. [more] |
![]() NOSTALGIA – ISHINHA (JAPAN) at ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 12 Mar 2009 |
Less than the sum of its extraordinary parts NOSTALGIA is a grand marathon 2-hour performance by Japan’s highly regarded Ishinha theatre company. It is the first part of a trilogy [which] symbolises the history of the 20th century in part by using a 4-metre high giant to show how ‘fat’ mankind has become in many regards. A timely resonance given the role greed has played in the current global economic downturn. [more] |
![]() POST GAY at Galatos reviewed by Candice Lewis 11 Mar 2009 |
Good subject matter not well handled There is definitely a place for theatre focusing on a wide range of sexuality; unfortunately Post Gay isn’t quite pulling it off. On the plus side, it opens up discussion about stereotypes, expectations and finding love. [more] |

Intense discussion about women's roles and perceptions With a name like virgin party I am expecting a comedy. I'm thinking of the sexual energy of university orientation, the toga parties on the quad ... Anyway, it turns out to be a fairly judicious (yet fun and very thought provoking) look at women's roles and stereotypes throughout history and boy, there's a lot to cover! [more] |

RUBY TUESDAY at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave reviewed by Sian Robertson 11 Mar 2009 |
Touching story hits the spot Even as we are filing in and taking our seats, the theatre becomes a classroom. The two actors, wearing the demeanour of stern teachers and grasping clipboards, address their seated ‘students’ and dole out reprimands and detentions to us for wearing our skirts too short or carving initials into desks. Divine Devenie I first saw this play, which is set in a community hall, actually performed in one in Wanaka, almost two years ago. Joseph Hatch’s “illustrated lecture” was terrific then, and after performing it many more times since, Stuart Devenie has lost none of his freshness and commitment to the role of the curmudgeonly entrepreneur, wildly successful businessman and ex-Mayor of Invercargill, Joseph Hatch.
