THE ORDERLY at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 5 Mar 2007
Heroic performance
With the well-mounted production of the solo play The Orderly the Fringe Festival has been given another welcome injection of professionalism by Anders Falstie-Jansen’s sleek direction and by Michael Downey’s excellent performance of the play’s heroic anti-hero Peter Russell. [more]

FIGHT OR FLIGHT at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 5 Mar 2007
Only briefly airborne
Fight or Flight is a comic look at the basic human instinct of fear, though the play starts and is later occasionally interrupted by a theatrical heightening of the real thing: brief interludes of mimed fear accompanied by terrifying sound effects. [more]

THE BOWLER HAT at BATS
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 21 Feb 2007
Bogged down Bowler Hat
The Bowler Hat is a surrealist murder mystery wrapped around the life and death of Magritte, the painter who is particularly famous for his disconcerting bowler hat, apple, fish and sky/window motifs. [more]

LOVERS OF CENTRAL PARK at Central Park (gather @ Willis Hotel)
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 22 Feb 2007
Strongly recommended
Lovers of Central Park by James Hadley is the self-styled ‘most romantic show in the fringe’. It offers both entertainment and exercise for the audience. Following our guides through the dappled prettiness and the seedy grey areas of Brooklyn’s Central Park, we’re on the lookout for lovers; past, present and future, new and old loves, lost and found loves. SCRATCH 'N FLY at BATS
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 21 Feb 2007
Captivating
Scratch ‘n’ Fly at Bats is deeply rooted in the circus/clown tradition, with a central character whose childlike curiosity and innocence are sorely tested, but whose imagination and determination win through. [more]

THE STORY OF NOHOME NEVILLE AND UNWHOLESOME CLARE WHO WORKED IN THE KITCHENS AND SMELT LIKE A DISH at BATS
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 21 Feb 2007
Classy poetic writing
The play with the longest title this Fringe, The Story of Nohome Neville and Wholesome Clare Who Worked in the Kitchens and Smelt Like a Dish, is also rather too long in execution. But – and it’s a big but – the writing is terrific, with more than a nod to Beckett but not at all copycat. [more]

A BRIEF HISTORY OF EVERYTHING IN THE SKY at Carter Observatory
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 21 Feb 2007
Squandered opportunity
A Brief History of Everything in the Sky has a seriously cool venue, the Carter Observatory. Matt Elliot and Mike Bodnar present, together then separately then together again, musings on the night sky. [more]

THE RETURN OF THE LONESOME BUCKWHIPS at Happy (Cnr Tory & Vivian)
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 21 Feb 2007
Viciously funny
The Return of the Lonesome Buckwhips is smart, sharp and viciously funny: the pick of the comedy I’ve seen so far by a country mile. Country being the operative word, as they sing songs of good old fashioned heart break and of ‘grief beyond belief’. [more]

ANTIGONE at Te Whaea National Dance and Drama Centre, 11 Hutchison Rd, Newtown
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 21 Feb 2007
Skill and passion
Antigone is the latest play from the Almost a Bird Collective, which produced the unforgettable The Glass Menagerie at Circa late last year. Willem Wassenaar is without question one of the most daring, most exciting directors in the Capital, the kind of director we need to get younger people into our theatres. [more]
