SPEAKEASY at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Poppy Haynes 26 Sep 2012
Lively, engaging and surprisingly cohesive
An unlikely pair sinking highballs in a prohibition-era speakeasy; a Chinese prostitute; a Contiki tourist who finds his true place in a monastery; a lascivious sandwich-factory owner: these are a few of the characters whose confessions, confidences and compulsions we encounter in Speakeasy. SPECTOR – WITH THE BEATGIRLS AND SPECIAL GUEST JASON CHASLAND at Circa One

Icon’s engaging trip through great musical era
As infamous as he was famous, Phil Spector has been one of the most influential people in the music industry post Rock and Roll. Developing the Spector ‘Wall of Sound’ production technique out of the Brill Building studios in New York, and with the creation of his girl groups such as The Ronnettes and The Crystals, he produced over 25 top 40 hits between 1960 and 1965. Superb Spector-inspired spectacle
Split into two Acts, Spector is a biographical trip through the life and music of Phil Spector: record producer, songwriter, Rock and Roll’s legendary madman. For opening night, guests were invited to dress up in all things 1960s-70s, in celebration of the songs to be performed – a range of vocal treats produced, written or inspired by Spector – though none of the audience’s costumes could live up to the fabulous rainbow dresses that adorn the BeatGirls at the beginning of Act II. Quirky, fun, upbeat
Phil Spector, the man who straddled the music industry and lived to tell the tale, has proven to be a veritable gold mine in the excessively capable hands of New Zealand’s favourite girl group, the Beatgirls. [more]

Inventive script with desperate characters
Our six sad, lonely, desperate characters are Bazz, the plumber and part time movie nerd; Nathaniel, the computer geek; Kasey the smarmy, oily guy; Margot the new-age grunge poet; Sally, a country and western chick; and Caroline, the fridge. Sure there are clichés in there ... [more]

SPIDER DANCE at Gryphon

A feminine tempest of divine creativity
The three actors’ dexterity at working with male and female roles and making them completely wacked and believable is legendary. And they do it as a balanced trio. They are all quirk-stars; ask anyone in the audience. The man in front of me was in hysterics. [more]

Fusion theatre at its best
It’s wonderful for Wellington that Capital E’s National Arts Festival is held here – and like my colleague Jennifer Shennan I’m proud to be a Wellingtonian because it is here – but it should really be touring the whole country for all to see and enjoy. [more]

Lost in translation
What a great idea – to meld Indonesian puppet theatre and gamelan music, a Pacific Island-New Zealand director and our own gamelan expert Gareth Farr to create a blended multi-cultural theatre work for Kiwi kids. Yet somehow something is lost in translation. [more]

Still relevant ancient tale beautifully told
A central screen, flanked by two long white tepees of cloth, provide the backgrounds on which atmospheric images and lights appear, and on which we see the beautifully made and operated puppets. [more]

SPOONFACE STEINBERG at The Forge at The Court Theatre

Exquistely crafted writing
Spooonface Steinberg by Lee Hall, performed at Court Two in Christchurch last month, was all that its hyperbole heralded it to be – uplifting, funny, and moving: a triumph for the A Different Light Theatre Trust. [more]
