A one-hour roller coaster crammed with social relevance ... Bang bang: five deaths wound thousands with a ripple effect as mothers, fathers, siblings, cousins, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends lose their loved ones ... It is hard to imagine how our tender, beautiful youth can possibly perform a show of such emotional power effectively and equally difficult to see how the play would work without a young cast. Such a question inspires a kind of cynical cringe in anyone worth talking to, but I’ll be darned if Drowning Bird Plummeting Fish (and its earned its italicised capitals) didn’t make me feel a little cynical. Refreshing, original, cheeky, noncommittal … For this Fringe Festival romp, Helen O’Rourke and Stephanie Cairns have created a surprisingly light-hearted, cute and frolicking piece of musical comedy, full of straight exposition and underdeveloped plot-lines, but wonderfully fun all the same.
