Top-rate performances as Backyard Shorts air again After having had successful try outs at Mighty Might’s Six O’clock Swill, Backyard Productions have now taken some of the short plays seen there and are giving them a second airing at the Gryphon Theatre. [more] |

Superb portrayals in Aussie classic “Two eagles flyin’ down out of the sun and coming south every year for the mating season.” This is how Olive describes the arrival of Roo and Barney, Queensland cane cutters who come to Melbourne for their five-month “lay-off.” [more] |

SUMMER SHORTS at Gryphon reviewed by Kate Blackhurst (The Lumiere Reader) 11 Dec 2008 |

Vignettes with varied themes The five playlets that comprise Summer Shorts all rely heavily on the power of dialogue and the ‘reveal’ (the aha moment). It is hard to pull this off in a short space of time, as there are limited foundations to be laid, and some of the plays work better than others. Due to some slick scene changes however, the pieces fit together well and the momentum is maintained. [more] |

Smooth as silk, full of emotion There’s no need to travel to New York for an evening of smooth, sophisticated cabaret performed by a top-liner in her prime. It’s all right here in Wellington even though we may not be sipping cocktails at tables looking out on to the Manhattan skyline. [more] |

Universal themes in culturally specific play ... Engaging with the characters forces us to reflect on the great pioneering tradition, and its mainstay, the tough larrikin hero, and of course, the worth of ‘mateship’, which was nearly written into the Australian constitution. Close enough to NZ values to be relevant, you might assume, and you would be right. [more] |

Unlikely love stories Blinkers is a play that stood out for me this year, for its originality and the charm of the performances from the young actors/devisors (Natalie Medlock and Dan Musgrove). It was a pleasure to see it again, this story of a rock fantasist (Amy) and an equine hobbyist (Monty). [more] |

Uneven but thought-provoking Christmas No one else sees the world quite like Paul Rothwell, recently named winner of the Bruce Mason Playwriting Award. It’s a great strength. [more] |

An ideal anecdote to the overwrought cacophony of Christmas Jennifer Ward-Lealand is practically New Zealand singing royalty. From her stunning entrance in a sparkling black dress with plunging neckline, she rules the stage. She remarks that ‘At the touch of love, everyone becomes a poet’ and she goes on to sing a selection of songs that tell stories. [more] |

‘Class act’ show of musical excellence could be more dramatically structured There’s nothing like hearing great songs, well sung. The Look of Love – Evocative/Provocative is a miscellany of songs “celebrating love in all its guises”: profound, foolish, passionate, sexy and (occasionally) even a little twisted. Jennifer Ward-Lealand is on stage once more with .... [more] |

Challenging, exciting, engaging Heat is a play rooted in friction, passion and conflict, set in a cold and eerie climate. Yet it is also beautiful and lyrical, as well as intensely physical. This play of contrasts gripped me for its entire length. [more] |
