STUCK UP THE ALLEY at Telecom Playhouse Theatre, WEL Energy Trust Academy of Performing Arts
reviewed by Gail Pittaway 5 Jul 2010
Humorous, fanciful, short on tension and climax
Not content with serving as the Butler in the eponymous other show by Joe Bennett in this Fuel festival, Tom Trevella follows it with this small delicacy for dessert: Stuck Up the Alley, by the same author. [more]

SUITCASE at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 21 Feb 2009
Has its moments but yet to achieve cohesion
What is culture in New Zealand? What does culture mean? What does it mean to live here? Why do we live here? Where do I actually belong? Am I 100% pure? [more]

SUMMER OF THE SEVENTEENTH DOLL at Globe Theatre
reviewed by Terry MacTavish 10 Dec 2008
Universal themes in culturally specific play
... Engaging with the characters forces us to reflect on the great pioneering tradition, and its mainstay, the tough larrikin hero, and of course, the worth of ‘mateship’, which was nearly written into the Australian constitution. Close enough to NZ values to be relevant, you might assume, and you would be right. [more]

SUMMER OF THE SEVENTEENTH DOLL at Globe Theatre
reviewed by Barbara Frame (Otago Daily Times) 12 Dec 2008
Superb portrayals in Aussie classic
“Two eagles flyin’ down out of the sun and coming south every year for the mating season.” This is how Olive describes the arrival of Roo and Barney, Queensland cane cutters who come to Melbourne for their five-month “lay-off.” [more]

SUMMER SHORTS at Gryphon
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 12 Dec 2008
Top-rate performances as Backyard Shorts air again
After having had successful try outs at Mighty Might’s Six O’clock Swill, Backyard Productions have now taken some of the short plays seen there and are giving them a second airing at the Gryphon Theatre. [more]

SUMMER SHORTS at Gryphon
reviewed by Kate Blackhurst (The Lumiere Reader) 11 Dec 2008
Vignettes with varied themes
The five playlets that comprise Summer Shorts all rely heavily on the power of dialogue and the ‘reveal’ (the aha moment). It is hard to pull this off in a short space of time, as there are limited foundations to be laid, and some of the plays work better than others. Due to some slick scene changes however, the pieces fit together well and the momentum is maintained. [more]

SUN DRUGS at Bats Pit Bar
reviewed by Hannah Smith 4 Mar 2010
Vigorous, quirky, performer-centric
A man walks into a bar, pulls out some shaving foam and hands razors to the brunettes seated at opposite ends of the front row. He proceeds to shave his face by playing an elaborate variation on Colombian Hypnosis. What on earth is going on? It is Sun/Drugs - the half hour one-man show being performed this week in the Pit bar. [more]

SUNAMEKE at Western Springs Lakeside
reviewed by Margi Vaz Martin 15 Mar 2010
Heed the call of the Chauka
Using traditional stories, dances and songs from across Oceania in a contemporary context; Sunameke illustrates the links between Pacific Islanders and the sea and highlights the future adversity that awaits them in the form of climate change. [more]

SUNDAY ROAST at Te Whaea - SEEyD Space, 11 Hutchison Rd, Newtown
reviewed by John Smythe 3 Mar 2010
Slicing into the rural rump
Thomas Sainsbury is so prolific it’s tempting to see his plays as a ‘fast food’ equivalent. But those I’ve seen are much more ‘nutritious’ than that and Sunday Roast is close to being a gourmet meal. [more]
