KIA ORA KHALID at Opera House
reviewed by John Smythe & Pepe Becker 15 Mar 2009
A masterpiece that contributes at many levels
We are instantly hooked by Gareth Farr’s composition and its execution by the band and cast, and equally impressed by Dave Armstrong’s characters, story and libretto; at the way these creators have worked together to place the right word on the right note and beat: not a simple task. [more]

Thrilling music and a strong story
I am ten years old. I’m in Mr Holmstead’s class at Houghton Valley School ...] Kia Ora Khalid is a show devoted to telling stories of refugees from war torn or poor countries without the economy to sustain large numbers of people. [more]

Amazing puppeteering in a story that could work better
The story follows Ollie as he tries to get back to being one with nature. Or actually he does not try to get back to nature, nature tries to get back to him. [more]

PASSING WIND at Paramount
reviewed by Hannah Smith 15 Mar 2011
Inspired and kooky educative experience for kids and adults
The things that Linsey Pollak can do with a rubber tube are genuinely amazing. In this 45 minute show, the self styled “instrument inventor” takes us on a musical journey in which he demonstrates how one can make a plethora of musical instruments out of common household objects. If something is hollow and has some holes in it, Linsey will pass wind through it with surprising results. Over the course of the show he blows a watering can, a feather duster, even a carrot – and, of course, our minds. Starting with the fairly simple balloon and garden hose, the instruments increase in complexity and cover an incredible range of sounds. [more]

TE RAU O TE RANGI at Te Papa Tongarewa, Te Marae, Cable Street

The love, the hardship, the journey
It’s an important thing, I feel, to be powhiri’d onto a theatre space. I so often tumble into a show as if by moving train – I forget to look forward to what I’m about to see. To wait at the entrance with 150 or so children to be welcomed onto the Marae is an opportunity for me to prepare myself physically and spiritually for what I am about to experience. [more]

SKY DANCER at Town Hall

Amazing music and design – but what about the story?
The music was amazing. I felt like it was taking me on a journey to a musical forest of my imagination. It was exciting from the moment I sat down in my chair and I got pulled in when the orchestra started playing. [more]
