SWAN LAKE ON ICE at St James Theatre
reviewed by Ann Hunt (The Dominion Post) 9 Jul 2010
Spirited ice show enchants crowd
The young child next to me sat entranced on the edge of her seat and whispered: “It’s so beautiful!” And it was. This enchanting production captures all the magic of the original ballet and adds theatrical punch and psychological depth. There are changes to the scenario, which work well in this context. [more]

Spectacle serves the story
With each successive production, The Imperial Ice Stars under the direction of Tony Mercer continue to redefine the genre of theatrical ice dancing. Rejecting the large scale arena spectacular of competitive ice dancing, they have opted instead to adapt the classic ballets for a 15 metre square ice stage under the proscenium arch ... [more]

Escapism of the highest order
The standards of artistic excellence of this production of Swan Lake on Ice have remained at a very high level in the interval of four years since it was first performed in Wellington. [more]

Emotion and story prevail over astonishing technique
One of ballet’s most often-presented classics has been given new heart and a touch of fire in this lavish, satisfying production by touring Russian company Imperial Ice Stars. [more]

Russian classic gorgeous served on ice with twist
Tchaikovsky's Russian love triangle - the tale of Odette, Odile and Prince Siegfried - has toured the world for 135 years, and it seems it will never get old. [more]

Auckland Fringe 2013
SWAN SONG at Parnell Baths, Judges Bay Road
reviewed by Dr Linda Ashley 14 Feb 2013
Wet, Hot, Enchanting and Hilarious
This refreshingly none-too-serious telling of the classic ballet story Swan Lake makes clever use of simple movement in its flowing (no pun intended) group formations, exits, entrances and transitions. The children’s pool of Parnell Baths is used to maximum effect in weaving a spell of pantomime, parody and moments of epic proportions. This is melodrama on steroids! [more]

Swan Swimming Pool
The Wet Hot Beauties run a water-tight operation. In groups of 15 the audience is ushered to take their seats pool side to watch (as well as receive the odd splash of water) the company’s latest unique contemporary spin on the Water Ballet genre for Auckland Fringe: Swan Song. While we wait, the Parnell Baths are filled by the incredible 65-strong cast who create a series of tableaus and pageantry ... [more]

SWEENEY TODD – THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET at Isaac Theatre Royal
reviewed by Tony Ryan 15 Oct 2010
Quality horror
Among its many strengths, Showbiz Christchurch’s production of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd is worth seeing for Juliet Reynolds-Midgley’s portrayal of Mrs Lovett alone. Midgley’s ability to go beyond mere portrayal of the character and to actually inhabit the role is quite remarkable. [more]

Vividly interpreted commentary on the grimness of life in Victorian London
My expectations of Peach Theatre Company’s production of Stephen Sondheim’s acclaimed musical thriller were based on having seen the Tim Burton film, which I didn’t like. What it lacked that this production has, is a Sweeney Todd you can sympathise with. [more]

Sharp casting gives edge to demon barber’s tale
Stephen Sondheim’s musical version of Sweeney Todd is a brilliant, bloodthirsty thriller that has the emotional intensity and moral discernment of a Greek tragedy. [more]
