![]() TOM GLEESON at The Classic reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 7 May 2013 |
Merciless truth How refreshing to have an Australian stand-up comedian strut on stage and bag us Kiwis ruthlessly, to our face, rather than the expected and much safer ANZAC-induced suck-up to get on-side. Are we really bogan yet progressive, polite yet self-deprecating? Yeah, nah, ’spose we are. Fair call. [more] |
![]() GERALDINE QUINN IN YOU’RE THE VOICE: SONGS FOR THE ORDINARY BY AN ANTHEMANIAC at Q, The Vault reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 8 May 2013 |
Impressive vocal range deserves a bigger audience Geraldine Quinn is a powerful singer with excellent vocal craft and stamina. I know of very few female vocalists who can belt, strut and flay themselves round stage for an hour, with the same intensity, passion and enthusiasm that Geraldine gifts to her audience in her one woman show, You’re The Voice. ![]() JAMES ACASTER at The Classic reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 14 May 2013 |
Intelligent craft and delivery appreciated Looking like Tin-Tin’s nerdy brother, James’ unassuming personality, appearance, and smooth casual delivery are as inherently funny as his perspective. As James quietly performs a whimsical yet cleverly calculated hour, his humour feels natural and completely off the cuff. [more] |
![]() THE ROSE MATAFEO VARIETY HOUR at The Basement reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 15 May 2013 |
Uneven Rose Matafeo’s opening night audience is a friendly, youthful European bunch; there’s a positive vibe in the refurbished Basement bar and theatre. We (two mothers in their 40s) are not the target market, but my motivation for coming is to see how Rose has grown and developed as a comedian. She’s 21 now, hosts a TV show and, as a stand up, has clocked up impressive comedy mileage. [more] |
![]() DOCTOR BROWN IN BEFRDFGTH at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge reviewed by Stephen Austin 2 May 2013 |
The wildest, most ridiculously surreal show you will see anywhere In this cynical world, it’s a pretty rare occasion to be amongst an audience still willing to entertain their sense of play as they leave the theatre. Doctor Brown (Phillip Burgers) has us all roaring, cackling and honking out into the street, with broad grins across our faces and a more engaged sense of even the smallest gesture of those around us. ![]() HEDLUV + PASSMAN IN 2 CORNISH RAPPERS AND A CASIOTONE at Cassette 9, 9 Vulcan Lane reviewed by Stephen Austin 10 May 2013 |
Doin’ it dreckly Musical comedy would seem to be sewn up in New Zealand by Flight of the Conchords, but if you head down to Cassette Number 9 this week, I’m sure you’ll find that there are sounds from elsewhere in the world worth listening to. Especially if you like pasty British white guy 90s-style rap. [more] |
![]() JOSEPH MOORE IN DOPE ASS JOKES at The Classic Studio reviewed by Stephen Austin 14 May 2013 |
Nerdy cool and hilarious angst As a performer, Moore is a tightly-wound ball of energy, prone to infrequent bursts of physicality. He has a clear crisp voice and knows how to hit a punch-line for maximum effect and when to pull back to let laughter transition an idea. His style is cool, but nerdy (even though he will vehemently deny it.) [more] |
![]() VAUGHAN KING & ALAN MCELROY IN ONE BUCKET, TWO COMEDIANS at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave reviewed by Stephen Austin 15 May 2013 |
Unpolished, unfocused, sloppy Vaughan King and Alan Mcelroy try to seize life and set out to tick a few achievements off their respective ‘Bucket Lists’ before they die. Life is simply too short, so they’ve decided to share that with us and help us tick a few off our own by leaving a bucket in the foyer for us to throw our ideas into. Except it seems all anyone in the audience who actually knew the bucket was there in the first place wants is to have sex with All Blacks. Or has a death wish. [more] |
![]() ED BYRNE - STANDING UP, FALLING DOWN at Bruce Mason Centre reviewed by Nik Smythe 4 May 2007 |
Stand up: generic and classic On the eve of the official launch of Auckland’s (and New Zealand’s) 2007 International Comedy Festival, Ed Byrne jumps the gun in a sort of premature ejaculation special, overseas there in Takapuna. [more] |
![]() MARK SCOTT IN SUPER JOKER at The Classic Studio reviewed by Nik Smythe 6 May 2007 |
The meek shall inherit the laugh ... Fortunately Mark Scott is funny for the most part, so that’s the important bit covered. A deeper analysis might unleash some great socially challenging profundity if that’s what you’re looking for. As Scott postulates lyrically on varied topics I’m reminded again that comedy is as much philosophy as it is rock and roll ... [more] |
