![]() LITTLE HOWARD AND THE MAGIC PENCIL OF LIFE AND DEATH at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge reviewed by Nik Smythe 22 Apr 2008 |
Big Howard Presents Little Howard: The Worlds First Fully Interactive Six Year Old Cartoon Comedian As the audience convenes, Big Howard, half the main duo of the piece, passes time in the wings by scribbling caricatures of audience members on a sensor pad which is projected onto the big screen. The effect is such that as the lights go down for the show to begin, the audience is already rather cheerful. [more] |

The only way is up In their self-proclaimed show ‘by geeks, for geeks’, Ben Kettel and Sam Spooner (yet not a kitchenware joke between them!?) claim to be of a different ilk to the generation X one that they ‘just don’t get’, but they’re slackers all over. They’re twenty year olds just like my friends and I were when we were twenty nearly twenty years ago. [more] |

NZ International Comedy Festival LINDAUER COMEDY DIVAS 08 at Crunchie Comedy Chamber, Town Hall reviewed by Nik Smythe 29 Apr 2008 |
Viva la Divas! Apparently, according to the insightful research of one Christopher Hichens, women don’t know how to be funny, being simply not genetically disposed to it. So it stands to reason emcee (Mistress of ceremonies? Madam perhaps? ...) Michelle A’Court wanted to call this show ‘The Christopher Hichens Memorial Women’s Comedy Showcase’. [more] |
![]() JIMEOIN ON ICE (IRE/AUS) at SKYCITY Theatre reviewed by Nik Smythe 30 Apr 2008 |
Inane genius Despite his long term relationship with Auckland’s Comedy Festival this is the first time I have had the privilege of the humour of Jimeoin, seemingly at once laid back and easygoing, and possibly dangerous given the baldness and the Irish accent. [more] |
![]() JANEY GODLEY IN TELL IT LIKE IT IS (SCOTLAND) at The Classic Basement (formerly Silo) reviewed by Nik Smythe 30 Apr 2008 |
Laugh out loud funny Breaking news: Janey Godley has been voted the 3rd funniest comedian in the UK in a TimeOut readers poll. The only woman to make the list, she doesn’t even getting around to mentioning that herself, too busy chatting up the poor defenceless lighting boy. [more] |
![]() THE AD-LOL-ESCENTS at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave reviewed by Nik Smythe 1 May 2008 |
Ah, youth ... Last year’s Class Comedians showcase performers return this year with High School Comical, a bona-fide professional comedy show by crikey. Although the atmosphere and support network available in a large scale festival is surely a great asset for fledgling comedy artists, still my hat goes off to the courage and fortitude displayed by the Ad-lol-escents. ![]() FUNK RABBIT (CANADA) at Comedy Underground, 305 Queen St reviewed by Nik Smythe 1 May 2008 |
An all-too-short hour of unrelenting hilarity In other reviews of improv shows I have despaired at the shallowness that is seemingly inherent in the form. Julian and Derek, the Canadian cast of Funk Rabbit, have addressed this issue to some degree. It doesn’t exactly increase the levels of meaning or deeper insight, but the whole exercise carries more depth of field if you like. [more] |
![]() ED CARUTHERS AND GRAEME ROWE IN AS MANY JOKES AS WE CAN GET AWAY WITH at Comedy Underground, 305 Queen St reviewed by Nik Smythe 1 May 2008 |

Ho-hum bigotry + rapid fire gags Simple two-header standup show this, first one, then the other, half an hour each. [more] |
![]() NIK COPPIN IN SPIDERS, MAN (UK) at The Transmission Room reviewed by Nik Smythe 2 May 2008 |
Just relax, man Regular mid thirties London geezer Nik Coppin has stopped off in Kiwiland on his international comedy circuit travels to tell us a bit about stuff like what he thinks about, and to try and pick up our accent ... [more] |
![]() POTTED POTTER: THE UNAUTHORISED HARRY EXPERIENCE at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge reviewed by Nik Smythe 2 May 2009 |
Relentlessly outrageous antics 7 books in 70 minutes? Is it possible? Seven Hairy McLary books maybe, but running a combined total of over 3500 pages the Harry Potter series poses a real challenge to our intrepid young British showmen, the long suffering Potter expert David, who mainly plays Harry, and his clueless cohort John, who covers virtually every other character.
