What a circus, what a show Not only is Adagio seriously sophisticated circus, it is also seriously enjoyable, thoroughly entertaining and a damn good night at the theatre. The traditional skills of circus performers and a contemporary theatrical sensibility have been combined and shaped by Deborah Pope into a show perfectly suited to the intimacy of Downstage. [more] |

Relevant commentary or escapist thrills? ... The whole play, however, may be seen as a metaphor for women’s liberation in that blind Susy (Ban Abdul) finally has to use her own intelligence and core confidence to outwit a clever trio of greed-motivated and morally moribund con-men, fixated on recovering a stash of heroin hidden in a doll. Tempo Festival of Dance 2008 CHEEK TO CHEEK at The Auckland Performing Arts Centre: TAPAC reviewed by Sue Cheesman 12 Oct 2008 |
|
A vibrancy of colour A regular feature each year is the Tempo dance style combos of pick a mix, and Cheek to Cheek - described as a good shindig, duet style - fitted the bill. It brought together tap dance, Spanish dance, tango, hip-hop, contemporary, salsa and ballroom. Glam, glitter, frills, suits and frocks mixed with a touch of razzle dazzle certainly celebrated partner dancing, in this myriad of styles. [more] |

THINGS I HATE ABOUT MOTHER at Dunedin Public Art Gallery Auditorium reviewed by Terry MacTavish 12 Oct 2008 |
|
Perspicacity, charm and potential for improvement Right from the start there is a comfortable sense of familiarity to Things I Hate About Mother. Sarah McDougall has an astute ear for the vernacular, and a willingness to expose her own typical mum quirks for the world to snigger at, perhaps even ridicule. There are no deep insights here, just an affectionately cheeky look at our primal relationship. [more] |

Tempo Festival of Dance 2008 LITTLE BIG OBSTINACIES at Centennial Theatre, Auckland Grammar School reviewed by Dr Linda Ashley 11 Oct 2008 |
|
The passing on of knowledge Kanan Deobhakta’s most recent work, Little Big Obstinacies, follows the legacy of classical dance’s affinity with the meta-issues of the human condition. Love, life, death, power, good, and of course, evil are all woven into the intricacies of the Bharata Natyam story-telling vocabulary. [more] |

Existential physical theatre: poignancy, wit, spectacle, danger The title warns us not to expect fast-paced and wacky acts of derring-do just for the sake of showing off. It starts with stillness, individuals in isolation. What little action there is, to Jonathan Crayford’s time-ticking musical background, is minimal … [more] |

A fascinating fragment of NZ history It's the 1920s, and we are in a lecture hall. Mr Joseph Hatch is going to tell us how he's been shamefully deprived of his licence to render down penguins for their oil, and ask for our support for its reinstatement. One of the last to arrive is Mr Hatch himself: elderly, tall, fussing with his papers and watch. With the aid of a magic-lantern show he describes his enterprise ... [more] |
