GUY WILLIAMS HAS WON AN AWARD at Auckland Old Folks Association. 8 Gundry Street (off K' Road)
reviewed by Kathryn van Beek 3 May 2013
Fun with the inner workings of an Ass and a mind
Number 8 Gundry Street holds a certain fascination for many Aucklanders. The building is serious, seriously retro, and emblazoned with ‘Auckland Old Folks Ass’ on the side. This evening the steamy Ass is filled to the gills with people eager to experience the comedy of Guy Williams ... [more]

TITTY BAR HA!HA! at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Kathryn van Beek 9 May 2013
Smutty fun with surreal puppetry of the breasts
Down on luck and low on morals, Hope and Gloria find themselves working in a strip club in wartime England. As planes fly overhead and police bang on the door the duo perform to their audience of desperados and bond over their shared love of gin, sexual innuendo and the dead guy Johnny under the floorboards. ELECTRICKOKOZOIDS: THE SOUTH PACIFIC GAMES 2008 at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge
reviewed by Louise Tu'u 12 May 2008
Strong writing and performing produce hilarity
Auckland’s newest comedy troupe, The Electrickokozoids, are nothing short of restorative: impeccable timing, simple props, mu’umu’u (Pacific Island oversized dresses), a broom, toy truck and outrageous wigs, combined with a heady mix of TV theme tunes from the 1980s and Pacific Island rivalry. THE HUNTING OF THE SNARK at BATS
reviewed by Melody Nixon (The Lumiere Reader) 11 May 2007
Intelligent and creative interpretation of a gem
They sought it with thimbles, they sought it with care; They pursued it with forks and hope; They threatened its life with a railway share; They charmed it with smiles and soap. Gertrude Chataway performs these gloriously elusive lines ... [more]

COMEDY DIVAS at Embassy Theatre
reviewed by Melody Nixon 20 May 2009
Undercurrent of raunchy nouveau feminism
The mood of Comedy Divas’ gloriously entertaining one night show is held deftly aloft by MC Fiona O’Laughlin. The Australian comedian has a talented mix of women to support her act – Hannah Gadsby, Penny Ashton, Jan Maree and Justine Smith are the stand outs of the stand ups – and though the intention is that O’Laughin ferries in and supports their routines, at the Wellington show we very much ended up with the reverse. A SONG FOR THE UGLY KIDS at BATS
reviewed by Melody Nixon 20 May 2009
Infectious silliness leaves warm glow
Natalie Medlock and Dan Musgrove present us with a twinkling, silly and gorgeous hour of entertainment in their one couple show A Song for the Ugly Kids. As they state in their curiously childish programme, this show is about “the things in life that are a little bit wrong” – wrong, but totally funny, that is. [more]

JEREMY ELWOOD - PASSPORT CONTROL at BATS
reviewed by Kate Blackhurst (The Lumiere Reader) 10 May 2007
Very funny and likeable
Jeremy Elwood comes across as the kind of nice bloke you could have a good laugh with down the pub. His material is interesting, if safe, and pitched expertly at his audience ... [more]

IMPROV THE MUSICAL at Circa Two
reviewed by Kate Blackhurst (The Lumiere Reader) 13 May 2007
You call the tune
IMPROVISATION is never easy, and relies largely on audience participation. This was evidenced last night as the barely half-full theatre didn’t manage to encourage a stellar performance from the cast of The Improvisers. [more]

HUSHABYE MOUNTAIN at Musgrove Studio, Maidment Theatre
reviewed by Jim McLarty 20 May 2007
An assured and accomplished production
... It’s Harvey’s belief that “the best comedy always comes from pain, and the comedies I love always have that element of darkness.” That point-of-view could almost sum up Hushabye Mountain. The laughs are there, but the situation that produces them is a sombre one. ... [more]

TRIPOD at The Transmission Room
reviewed by Sian Robertson 13 May 2007
Musical comedy at its finest
Tripod are three Aussie blokes with two guitars, singing funny songs and sounding something like a twisted, rock/country Simon and Garfunkle with a kick. Very genuine, multi-talented performers, their on-stage caricatures play off against each other beautifully. [more]
