![]() MEDIUM RARE at The Classic Basement (formerly Silo) reviewed by Sian Robertson 23 Apr 2008 |
Fledgling comics show promise Medium Rare are the fresh meat of NZ’s comedy talent pool, high school aged lads and lasses who, with a bit of experience under their belts, are now ‘less bloody than you think’. Not all of their material centres around being a teenager – in fact they’ve all done well to avoid most of the predictable clichés, and they’ve all got something to say. [more] |
![]() ARJ BARKER: NEW AND IMPROVED (USA) at Crunchie Comedy Chamber, Town Hall reviewed by Sian Robertson 23 Apr 2008 |
Plays us like a drum kit Known to most of us as Dave from Flight of the Conchords, some of you are going to be disappointed to learn that Arj Barker’s Auckland shows are completely sold out – for good reason. [more] |
![]() JOSIE LONG: TRYING IS GOOD (UK) at BATS reviewed by Sian Robertson 24 Apr 2008 |
Entirely original and big hearted Josie Long is like that friend or acquaintance (you know the one I mean) who’s bubbly, irrepressibly positive, passionate and quirky, who everyone likes, but who is best administered in small doses. [more] |
![]() STAND UP FOR KIDS at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge reviewed by Sian Robertson 24 Apr 2008 |
Mostly involving Stand Up For Kids boasts a varying line up of several of the festival’s local and international comedians, the ‘Little Big Show’ if you like – one hour long, four acts, with Jamie Bowen revving it up as MC. [more] |
![]() THE LONESOME BUCKWHIPS' CHARITY GALA at The Transmission Room reviewed by Sian Robertson 27 Apr 2008 |
Sure to peel your spuds The Buckwhips – Miri (Miriama Ketu, on violin), Arty (Arthur Meek, on rhythm guitar), Gary (Gareth Williams, keyboard) and Benny (Ben Hutchison, lead guitar) – are putting on a charity gig, the proceeds of which will go to a South Island family band of their choosing... ![]() RUBBER TURKEY at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave reviewed by Sian Robertson 30 Apr 2008 |
Darkly witty, superbly constructed Rubber Turkey is a slit-your-wrists-sharp comedy about comedy that tickles your cerebral cortex as well as your funny bone. Actually, I can’t tell if it’s a tragedy masquerading as a comedy or the other way around. “All the best comedy is born of tragedy” (and vice versa), explains Guy (Alex Grieg) – I guess therein lies my answer. ![]() STEVE WRIGLEY: THE FIRST TIME at The Classic Studio reviewed by Sian Robertson 6 May 2008 |
Honest, wicked, imaginative ... Although there's a thematic thread, Wrigley's set is loosely structured and associative, trawling you energetically through the dirty laundry of his thoughts, which can be squalid and touching in equal measures, but either way, pretty damn funny. His weaknesses are his strength. [more] |
![]() MRS. PEACOCK: SIX FEET FROM THE EDGE at Comedy Underground, 305 Queen St reviewed by Sian Robertson 7 May 2008 |
Hamstrung by expectation? Dave Smith and Jarrod Baker are ‘Mrs Peacock’ – the band that doesn’t have a front man with a huge forehead. Six Feet From The Edge is about them trying to write a rock opera... and it’s not really working for them; Dave’s talking about going overseas with his girlfriend; they don’t like each other’s ideas; they don’t have many ideas; they don’t even seem to care that much about having good ideas. ![]() BRENDHAN LOVEGROVE: LIVE at Crunchie Comedy Chamber, Town Hall reviewed by Sian Robertson 9 May 2008 |
Pushing it Relentlessly un-PC, Brendhan Lovegrove is a one-man version of South Park. He covers all the bases from racism to scatology, with something to offend everyone, except he’s got no ulterior motive, no political message. [more] |
![]() THE KRANSKY SISTERS at Comedy Chamber, Town Hall, THE EDGE reviewed by Sian Robertson 3 May 2009 |
Creepy trio The musical Kransky Sisters aren’t your usual recipe for a knee-slapping comedy show. The attraction is in their understated, unsettling performances and the sense created by a flawless adherence to their oddly naïve characters that perhaps these women aren’t acting at all. [more] |
