![]() ROCKET! at Comedy Underground, 305 Queen St reviewed by Sian Robertson 23 May 2009 |
Disorganised, disagreeing … and overly apologetic Rocket! takes you through the twelve steps to becoming a boxing world champion, so you too can make your dream come true. After all, who doesn’t harbour a secret desire to be a pro at punching people’s lights out? [more] |
![]() MICKEY D GET ON WITH IT! at The Basement Studio, Lower Greys Ave reviewed by Sian Robertson 8 May 2013 |
Raucous, cheeky, crass, rambling, maniacal … Mickey D's extremely crass scatological humour is sometimes just disgusting without being particularly funny (unless you're into that sort of thing?) but usually he manages to tick both boxes. [more] |
![]() THE LONESOME BUCKWHIPS at 101 @ Bodega reviewed by Thomas LaHood 9 May 2007 |
Sophisticated, smart material masquerades as simple humour The Lonesome Buckwhips look set to ignite audiences like brushfire across the prairie with their New Zealand tour. Their blend of fighting words and four-part harmonies has been reworked and refined since their Best Comedy award-winning debut at the 2007 Wellington Fringe, making an already enjoyable show into a great evening’s entertainment. ![]() BRENDHAN LOVEGROVE PRESENTS THE EMPERORS NEW SHOW at San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba St reviewed by Thomas LaHood 10 May 2007 |
Boredom translated Mr. Lovegrove is widely promoted and acknowledged as New Zealand’s ‘premier comic’, and he is certainly a master of the embittered, withering wit that is the backbone of the stand-up form. He looks the part too, shaved head, leather jacket, dragging heavily on his cigarette as he trawls along the queue waiting outside the venue, asking the punters “have you seen me before?” The Emperor greets his subjects. ![]() DAI HENWOOD - DAI-NAMIC SCENARIOS at San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba St reviewed by Thomas LaHood 10 May 2007 |
Robustly cheerful Sometimes it can be hard to find a point of difference between stand-up performers. Until you get a feel for their material, they tend toward an inexpressive sameness in appearance – either slightly overweight guys in t-shirts and jeans, or men in suits.* [more] |
![]() JEREMY ELWOOD - PASSPORT CONTROL at BATS reviewed by Thomas LaHood 11 May 2007 |
A lot to like but little to laugh at A stand-up comedian performing with the flu is tough to review, because you have to accept that their performance is below par due to circumstances beyond their control – to some extent anyway.* So at first, as Jeremy Elwood bravely soldiered on under the unforgiving lights of Bats Theatre, I thought that I was really enjoying his show - but I was probably just being polite. ![]() TARUN MOHANBHAI - ONE MIC STAND at San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba St reviewed by Thomas LaHood 16 May 2007 |
This nerd needs to get out more Tarun Mohanbai’s comic persona is clearly a nerd, from his ‘Fat Albert’-style red jersey over white shirt to the way his voice squeaks when he gets excited. This is his charm as well as his schtick, but nerdiness was not enough to win the audience over at his opening-night gig in Wellington. [more] |
![]() JAMIE BOWEN - I DO THESE THINGS SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO at 101 @ Bodega reviewed by Thomas LaHood 17 May 2007 |
Depends on super-stimulated delivery He claims to be performing on Ritalin, and judging by the way he bounces off the walls it’s possible that Jamie Bowen isn’t joking. He fills the stage with the all the energy and tension of a hyperactive toddler, at times a bit suffocating but overall whipping his audience into life and keeping them excited and engaged. But for me I Do These Things… is a bit like fairy bread – take away the sugar high and it’s really just a slice of Tip-Top white. [more] |
![]() ANDREW MCCLELLAND’S MIXED TAPE at BATS reviewed by Thomas LaHood 17 May 2007 |
Moments of absurdity and hilarity amid infectious warmth McClelland’s boyish enthusiasm is exhibited from the very start, as he prances onstage to the Jackson 5’s ‘Want You Back’ and performs a very bouncy dance number, beaming away like a gigantic, tipsy guinea pig. His joyful appreciation of music permeates the show and keeps us onside throughout. However ... [more] |
