MR MARMALADE at BATS
reviewed by Thomas LaHood 27 Sep 2008
Precocious in performance and production
Like your theatre bittersweet? Here is a sweetly sinister little comedy that is as unsettling and thought-provoking as it is funny, produced with aplomb by The Moving Theatre Company. [more]

THE LITTLE TRAGEDIES at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 26 Sep 2008
Modern, lyrical and timeless
At Bats The Theatre of Glorious Abandon is back after its puzzling Dostoevsky’s Trip earlier in the year with the NZ premier of Pushkin’s rarely performed The Little Tragedies which is made up of four short verse plays written in 1830. [more]

Rich and energetic production
This is a rare treat: three punchy short dramas of avarice, lust and jealousy by the grandfather of Russian literature - in the New Zealand premiere - directed by visiting Stanislavsky specialist, Slava Stepnov. [more]

THE SOUND OF MUSIC at Opera House
reviewed by Pepe Becker 26 Sep 2008
Fresh production of perennial work
What a treat! Right from the first Julie-Andrews-esque “The hills are alive…” to the final “Climb every mountain” curtain call, this production does all the things it should, including bringing the odd tear to the eye. [more]

Reworked Bare still sizzles with warmth
Silo Theatre celebrates the 10th anniversary of Bare, Toa Fraser’s mosaic of contemporary life in Newmarket, Auckland and by extension of contemporary New Zealand, with a new production that sizzles with invention and makes one temporarily forget that we have seen too many monologue plays recently. [more]

DADDY’S HOME at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Renee Liang (The Lumiere Reader) 26 Sep 2008
Highly recommended
“Best not drop the baby!” How many first-time dads have heard this joke and inwardly groaned. After all, in today’s modern world, surely Dads are as well-equipped as Mums to handle the pressures of full-time parenting. It is with this thought that Laurence Dolan’s new play, Daddy’s Home, opens. [more]

DADDY’S HOME at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Jessie Kollen 24 Sep 2008
Uncomplicated entertainment
Daddy’s Home tells its tale from a father’s point of view and takes much of its comedy from that perspective, but the story hinges on a simple fact of life: no matter who you are, parenting is exhausting [more]

Bare no more
Purists be warned: Bare is bare no more. The classic piece of Kiwi ‘poor theatre’ - that from 1998 wowed audiences here and around the world by showing (yet again) how two actors/no props could conjure multiple characters’ stories so powerfully you could virtually smell the burger bars, kitchens and backyards of South Auckland - has got dressed. THE DEVIL’S ARCHITECT at Soundings - Te Papa
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson 23 Sep 2008
Intense but unsatisfying
A short play by a Canadian playwright about Albert Speer entitled The Devil’s Architect: an intense study of the nature of evil was given its world premiere at Soundings Theatre last weekend. It will play in Hastings from 6-8 October under the auspices of Theatre Enterprises and Hawke’s Bay Youth Theatre. Odd are the ways of theatre at times. [more]
