Engaging energy and dynamism The ease with which Whitehall Comprehensive becomes Whiti High School may not be a credit to New Zealand, though, given that Godber’s play criticises an educational system rigged to shore up the class system and ensure that working class kids stay that way. I also note that high-achieving, relatively privileged university students here often ask me for letters of reference to help them get the same dismal, low-end service industry jobs that Godber’s underprivileged characters resign themselves to as their punishment for not going to university. At her best with lyrical, understated interpretation of ballads The decision to stage this rarely performed one-act musical is hardly a risk, what with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Don Black’s name on the credits, but it does put the pressure on to deliver the goods once the lights go down. [more] |

Left in a bind With the right vehicle a musician can stake their claim in the world of acting. From Madonna in 1996’s Evita to Melanie Brown in the 2004 revival of Rent, the musical stage and screen is becoming readily accepted as a platform on which such musical artists may step. I was excited at the prospect of not only seeing the one-woman Andrew Lloyd Webber show Tell Me On A Sunday for the first time, but for the fact that Carly Binding was that one woman. [more] |

A storm to feel at home in Director Lemi Ponifasio's latest vision for his company Mau, though – as always – powerful and evocative, required a fair amount of cultural literacy based upon the themes and events of Shakespeare’s The Tempest as well as Maori language. Maori was spoken thoroughly throughout this Tempest by its main protagonist, renowned Maori activist Wairere Tamaiti of the Tuhoe tribe. [more] |

Turmoil and suffering produce lasting impressions It’s difficult at the best of times to evoke the experience of a theatrical encounter in the structural, mental form of words combined into sentences… To even describe let alone evoke the raw, visceral, painful, spiritual, emotionally violent, existential experience of MAU Theatre is frankly impossible. So here goes: [more] |

The textures of terror – should come with a warning? Opening abruptly as house lights are cut and a wall of sound is simultaneously driven into the audience, this is a storm delivered without warning. In what can only be described as a massive acoustic assault, the initial explosion signifying the beginning of TEMPEST: Without a Body is followed by an ominous, industrial sound-scape that effectively sustains the audience in an involuntarily altered state for the duration of Ponifasio’s work. Tentalising Expectant murmurings amongst the audience are matched by murmurings within a tent, pitched centre stage and illuminated from within. Muttered voices and morepork calls set the scene and a shadowy evening light outlines the dancers as they emerge one by one into our world. As the tent is dismantled and shrugged away the foetal curve of a curled sleeping figure is discovered. [more] |

Improvisations of compelling beauty This new work devised by Michael Parmenter is built from studio improvisation techniques with a cast of eight dancers – Craig Bary, Victoria Columbus, Sarah Foster, Justin Haiu, Claire Lissaman, Destiny Stein, Adam Synnott, Christopher Tandy. The dancers work in a strong team, anticipating and relating to each other’s moves as though they had been performing together for years. [more] |

A new vitality and youthful exuberance but lacks cohesion This eagerly awaited work by Michael Parmenter is a collaborative choreographic effort by himself and the eight dancers that comprise Commotion’s current line-up. As such it is a mixed bag. [more] |

Artist pitches Tent on solid ground It is a brave move for a long-established artist to abandon his signature style in choreography and his standard mode of production and hand over a good deal of the responsibility for the timing and pace of the performance to the dancers. On the face of it, that is what Michael Parmenter has done with his latest production, Tent. [more] |
