THAT'S SO GAY at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 27 Apr 2012
Some good discussion-starters but could be more entertaining
As a collaborative theatre production between students from Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School and young people from School’s Out, Wellington (a hangout/support group for young people identifying as queer, lesbian, gay, transgender, takatapui, fa'afafine, genderqueer, androgynous, bisexual, pansexual, intersex, curious, unsure, questioning, and their friends), the community from which the material is sourced is clear. THAT'S SO GAY at BATS

Prejudice explored
Although coming out for gay and lesbian’s has become progressively easier over the years, especially for young people, homophobia still abounds, especially in institutions such as schools. [more]

THE 1/4 POUNDING at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 6 May 2006
When trite turns true
... But the surprisingly uninventive introduction and narrative links, and the rather clichéd content, are thankfully superseded by some well-honed sketches and performances that distil human experience into moments of truth that are inherently entertaining. [more]

THE 1/4 POUNDING at BATS

Mid-twenties crisis handled with deftness
Once upon a time it used to be the mid-life crisis that everyone talked about; the fear expressed by those reaching 40 and the trauma of those experiencing life after 40. But now it appears there’s a new phenomenon, the Quarter Life crisis, recently gaining prominence in film and on talk shows such as Oprah. [more]

THE 1/4 POUNDING at Revolt Melbourne – Theatrette, 12 Elizabeth St, Kensington

Comedic talents the highlight
I felt anxious sitting in the theatre waiting for The ¼ Pounding to begin. Would I be the 29 year old with no assets, no boyfriend and a slight alcohol dependency problem who ended up sobbing in the front row? I put down my wine. [more]

THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE at SKYCITY Theatre
reviewed by Nik Smythe 9 Nov 2008
Jocose euphonious apologue
At the outset there’s a sense of irony that a full scale musical has been produced about an event as altogether trivial as a spelling bee. Then as the characters take us through the iconically American contest, typically the battleground for pubescent geeks, the validity of the concept is made clear somehow through the expression of the distinct characters. THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE at SKYCITY Theatre
reviewed by Paul Simei-Barton (New Zealand Herald) 10 Nov 2008
Teen neuroses mix with devotion to spelling
In a period of uncertainty when proper usage is under siege from the weirdly phonetic truncations of txtng, there is something deeply appealing in a spelling competition. The zealous pursuit of correctness and unquestioning respect for the infallible authority of the dictionary reminds us of a less complicated time. [more]

THE 3 BEARS … AND GOLDILOCKS at Circa Two
reviewed by John Smythe 2 Jul 2012
A little lacking in buoyancy
Having suffered their home invasion, Baby Bear is trying to fix his broken chair and Mother Bear cannot bear to hear the ‘G’ name, so she and Father Bear have put their house on the market through Big Bad Wolf Real Estate. It’s an Open Home we have arrived at. Children in the audience are prevailed upon to tell us what’s happened – and what ensues is improvised within a basic structure. [more]

Post-Goldilocks adventures
The story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears gets another telling these holidays, this time from Improvisors Kids at Circa Two. However this production, titled The 3 Bears, is post-Goldilocks and follows the adventures of the three Bears after their home invasion by Goldilocks, who never actually appears in this production. THE 37TH SITUATION at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 18 Feb 2012
Jam-packed hour of entertaining exploration
Amid a clutter of books, boxes, cases and a desk, The Situationalists ... play with each in random order. Sometimes true and very personal experiences will inform the content of what’s played out; sometimes highly imaginative scenarios emerge. Sometimes the relationship between the projected situation title and what they are doing is clear; sometimes it’s obscure. [more]
