THE PIED PIPER OF HAMILTON at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge
reviewed by Jessie Kollen 16 May 2009
Extreme characters and physical tom-foolery
Who likes pies? The members of the Hamilton District Council love pies, in fact that’s all they eat, actually that’s all ANYONE ever eats in Hamilton, according to The Pied Piper of Hamilton. [more]

DAI HENWOOD IS SHABBA! at SKYCITY Theatre
reviewed by Jessie Kollen 20 May 2009
Giving 100%
Most of the time Dai Henwood does New Zealand comedy for New Zealanders. His jokes are not just the ‘you had to be there,’ type of joke, they are also the ‘you have to be here’ type of joke. And if you are here (or if you were there), they will definitely have you laughing. [more]

THE UMBILICAL BROTHERS: THE REHEARSAL at SKYCITY Theatre
reviewed by Hap Richardson 7 May 2008
Contagious good time
In the centre of an empty stage is a screen, bathed in orange light. The soundtrack suggests a wild jungle in the middle of a wind storm. Shadows are cast across the stage of two animals hard to make out at first. The noises are excited, high pitched … Monkeys! Wild monkeys! Is this a piece on evolution? The stage is set for an exciting night. The stage lights come up ... the music stops ... the monkeys stand upright, introduce themselves as The Umbilical Brothers and welcome us to this, their Rehearsal. [more]

CADBURY CRUNCHIE COMEDY GALA at Civic Theatre
reviewed by Russell Baillie (New Zealand Herald) 21 Apr 2008
The sacrificial altar of laughter
With its gas flames, its pools of water and stone walls, the stage set of the NZ International Comedy Festival gala opening had the unfortunate look of a sacrificial altar. [more]

ONE MAN STAR WARS TRILOGY (CANADA) at SKYCITY Theatre
reviewed by Russell Baillie (New Zealand Herald) 7 May 2008
Plenty to laugh at over on the daft side
To be frank, there are better impersonators of Star Wars characters out there. Or, in fact, in here - guys from the local fan club lined up as a stormtrooper guard of honour at the opening night of this comedy festival show. They sure looked the part. But Canadian Charles Ross doesn't really have to. [more]

CADBURY CRUNCHIE COMEDY GALA at ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre
reviewed by Russell Baillie 26 Apr 2010
Women get the last laugh in comedy gala's opening lines
As always, the first joke of the night in this opening barrage of the Auckland International Comedy Festival was the stage. They had gone with a Cuban theme with a banner "Viva Comedy!" above a street scene of distressed post-Castro chic ... [more]

THE MULLET BROTHERS GO FOR GOLD at Bluenote Bar
reviewed by Patrick Davies 25 Apr 2008
Stereotypes on steroids
The show/conceit is that after winning Gold they got so blotto they can’t remember any of the details and Terry and Darren ‘re-construct’ the amazing journey from go to woe, and you’ll also discover why it was all hushed up. [more]

THEATRESPORTS at Circa Two
reviewed by Patrick Davies 28 Apr 2008
The vibe of a friendly fun fight
This marks the first show of the Theatresports™ Season run by the prodigious ‘The Improvisors’. A full house at Circa Two cheered, suggested and guffawed their little hearts out. [more]

SIMON MCKINNEY: LAND OF THE LONG WHITE CLOWN at San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba St
reviewed by Patrick Davies 28 Apr 2008
From impressive to genius
McKinney is best known for his ‘funny voices’ which he uses with great skill to bring to the stage a range of characters and experiences, from over made-up aggressive old people to an hilarious sequence called ‘Parents of the Caribbean’. [more]
