Quirky and lots of fun Terror Island is fun and entertaining. You can just sit back, relax and enjoy it with the performers. It’s a small, intimate and quirky performance, and you feel like you’re part of the dancers’ lives just by being there. [more] |

Terribly amusing Devised from an eclectic range of hit pop songs from across the decades, I was pleasantly surprised with how well a narrative the collaborative team of Fingerprints & Teeth Productions and Dynamotion were able to create for the dance/theatre show Terror Island. [more] |

Robots vs Humans in an effervescent romp A comic-bookish tale of a dystopian world populated by humans and robots, it is delivered through effervescent dance routines. Very quick costume switches signal whether the performers are now humans or robots, or the central brain of the internet-based computer system driving the world along. [more] |

Another late-night assortment of standup protagonists, with an original twist: rather than offering a taste of their material and plugging whatever shows they have on during the festival, head comedy-lab technician Terry Frisby has appointed each performer with ‘inappropriate material’. i.e. cast-against-type scripts from other local comics. Attractive, charming, incredibly well prepared and very funny The longest living people have nine secrets. So says Terry Williams, The Grin Reaper, and the aforementioned nine secrets provide the theme for his latest show. He’s right, of course, about the nine secrets, but as with most good comedy shows this doesn’t stop Williams commenting liberally on anything and everything including the occasional words of support - and advice - he gets from the more vocal members of his audience and, in so doing, he definitely runs the gamut of human experience. A rollercoaster programme A newcomer to the scene of tertiary performing arts is Manukau Institute of Technology. With 20 students, guest tutor/choreographer, Unitec graduate, Josh Rutter produces Glamour Technologies. I like to think that this work has emerged from a blend of practice with theory as it delves intoexploring the close relationship that young people have with the internet as a reality. There is an echo of the raw energy that the audience felt earlier but the sheer size of this group take attitude to a whole new level. Coolarama struts through hyperspace and it’s all about conforming, and it’s not all pretty, but it is pretty funny in places. [more] |
