Undemanding romp Babycakes is an undemanding invitation to the wedding table from hell, where a reunion of old call centre workmates turns into a slanging match. Georgina Titheridge goes for easy laughs and stereotypes (and that’s ok if, as it did on opening night, it gets the audience laughing). [more] |

Great little play with twists With Babycakes, Georgina Titheridge has written a Kiwi version of Closer. That’s not to say that it is derivative, but that it shares the same tight script and cutting-edge characterisation ... [more] |

An extraordinary sensory experience whichever way you interpret it Abandon reality all who enter here; submit instead to abstraction. Sense, recall, interpret, imagine; intuitively or at will. And know that if you should decode a meaning in anything, another will be possible. Besides, what gives you the clue will change to invalidate the first explanation. [more] |

Itinerant dance could go further and deeper The performers are scattered around the bus as we take off, there is a sense of anticipation. One of the strongest moments on the journey happens early on when Emma Johnston waves the bus down and staggers on under a load of shopping. The craziness of her solo is fabulous. [more] |

Innovative choreography, high energy dance and emotional connection Three main characters played by Sacha Copland, Rosanne Christine and Natalie Hona take turns to portray their individual stories throughout the bus journey and at specially selected locations. Each character is perhaps an over-exaggerated version of the everyday bus passenger ... [more] |

|
Perfect last word in a festival of existentialism The process for evolving the content for Back Story began, as I understand it, with each performer approaching a stranger and asking them for a story to use in a play. Bringing the stories to the group, they developed the characters of their interviewees to make them their own, workshopped their stories up together and wove them all together for the stage with a fresh vibrant conceptual attitude. A little inspired improv quirkiness helps make real characters out of stereotypes Back Story is a high energy devised work that takes the pulse of the city with improvisations around material that was collected by asking randomly selected citizens to provide a story for a play. [more] |

|
Distilled, focused and very engaging It is a form of ‘verbatim’ and ‘playback’ theatre that literally involves the five ear-plugged actors playing back – to themselves – fragments of interviews on their i-pods and simultaneously recreating the words, syntax, rhythms and accents of their 16 interviewees.
