GREG ELLIS IN VANCE FONTAINE FOR LOVERS at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Vanessa Byrnes 8 May 2013
Improv’s Lovechild: Lyrical Love Lord extraordinaire
If John Rowles, Barry White and improv guru Keith Johnstone could father a child together, Vance Fontaine might be it. Greg Ellis’s immense skills as an improviser are put to good use in this semi-structured show that tackles the peaks and troughs of amour. [more]

JIMEOIN IN WHAT?! at SKYCITY Theatre
reviewed by Vanessa Byrnes 16 May 2013
Compromised by the venue?
Being more than a touch Irish, I had been really looking forward to an hour with Jimeoin, the Northern Irish comedian from “eastside of the west coast”. I do love a good laugh and ‘the craic’ is usually a guaranteed source of wild laughter. [more]

TE RADAR’S EATING THE DOG at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by John Smythe (2) 29 Jun 2010
A paradoxical achievement
Performance-wise Te Radar is more relaxed and assured yet still as lively, enthusiastic and discursive as ever, delighting us afresh with his rediscovery of these stories and with injecting topical asides that prove we Kiwis were ever thus. [more]

MAEVE HIGGINS: KITTEN BRIDES at BATS
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 5 May 2009
Humour from the heart; funny to the bone
As we enter Bats, I’m struck by the wide age range of the audience and the number of Irish accents. The otherwise empty stage contains a table sporting a dolls’ house, a vase of silk flowers (with water in it) and a china Bambi figurine; a bentwood chair and a suitcase. Intriguing. [more]

TOBY HADOKE IN ‘MOTHS ATE MY DOCTOR WHO SCARF’ at BATS
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 12 May 2009
This humour goes deep
Using himself, voice overs, music and occasionally his teenage diary, Hadoke tells the story of his life growing up as a social misfit with an obsessive love for Doctor Who, which is an ever-decreasing circle indeed. His love of Doctor Who sets him apart from the other kids ... [more]

DAVE WIGGINS: I’M A BELIEVER at Fringe Bar, Cnr Cuba & Vivian
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 13 May 2009
It Was Brilliant
Dave Wiggins’ stand up show is named for the song famous in Wellington as its anthem. It’s a toe tapping, energetic number with optimism and good cheer oozing from every note. Just like Dave Wiggins! [more]

FERGUS AITKEN: TRUE STORIES & OTHER STUFF THAT PROBABLY ISN’T at Paramount Theatre, Bergman Room
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 14 May 2009
Right up there with the best
It is little wonder D-vice are sponsoring Fergus Aitken’s show in the festival. He is just like one of their magic sex toys – the perfect thing to stimulate you at 10.30 on a week night!!! His other sponsor is Coffee Spot, I rest my case. [more]

THE COMEDIETTES at Fringe Bar, Cnr Cuba & Vivian
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 21 May 2009
Sharp, sassy and wearing stilettos
It’s a bit like one of those jokes: a blonde, a redhead and a brunette go into a bar… These girls really know the way to a woman’s heart. Mischief shoe discount vouchers on every chair at the venue!! I’m already won over!! [more]

JARRED CHRISTMAS IN LET’S GO MOFO at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 1 May 2013
An hour of many moods
Joy to the World (or at least to the Wellington bit of it), Jarred Christmas has come! The comedian who may single-handedly revive a fashion for huge sideburns and western shirts is playing Downstage. [more]

WAYNE BRADY STILL MAKIN' SH*T UP at Opera House
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 8 May 2013
Yes to the Yes
In a festival crammed with stand up comics, Wayne Brady is one of the few internationals to be doing something different. He opens the show with a rap that incorporates words that Mangum has elicited from the audience. These included pulchritudinous and xenophobic. Creating rhymes that make sense is one of his talents.
