THE BIRTHDAY BOY at Court One
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 9 Sep 2008
Best to laugh, really
There is always an extra frisson hovering over the opening of a new work and a commissioned one at that. Has the faith been justified? Is the territory fresh (please, O please)? Are we provoked? Entertained? Both? Carl Nixon is a versatile writer, well positioned to meet all such challenges ... [more]

THE BIRTHDAY PARTY at Musgrove Studio, Maidment Theatre
reviewed by Nik Smythe 10 Mar 2012
Solid instability
(potent pause) Productions’ latest offering is Pinter's 1958 classic, over half a century old but somehow still as bewilderingly relevant as ever. [more]

Pinter’s Party a refreshing outing
At first glance, the John Parker set for this excellent (potent pause) production looks merely 1950s realist. However - fittingly for a Harold Pinter play - not all is as it seems: the lamps suspended over the action are shaped like hand grenades. [more]

THE BITCHES’ BOX at Q Theatre Loft, 305 Queen St
reviewed by Matt Baker (Theatre Scenes - Auckland Theatre Blog) 22 Feb 2013
Hot Dog!
After forty-two shows across the country in their (literal) Woolshed Tour, actresses Emma Newborn and Amelia Guild finally bring their two-woman show to Auckland for the 2013 Fringe Festival. “Born out of a dream and desire to provide rural audiences a chance to have a truly unique night out with their neighbours”, if the show was received as well on tour as it was on its opening night in the City of Sails, it could only have been an unreserved success. A unique experience
After touring Nationwide, The Bitches’ Box now graces the Auckland stage to reveal the multiple layers and the inner psyches of 'man's best friend'. [more]

THE BLACK HOLE MENAGERIE at BATS
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 1 Mar 2010
Menagerie lost in a black hole
Subtitled A Science Fiction Musical - 2010: A Sexual Odyssey,it presumably models itself on cult-type musicals like The Rocky Horror Show but misses the mark badly. [more]

THE BLACK HOLE MENAGERIE at BATS

Tame, unfunny, self-indulgent
In space nobody can hear you scream. And there is nobody to come to your rescue either. And thus you are trapped in one full hour of The Black Hole Menagerie, which is, without doubt, the worst science fiction sex musical that I have ever been subjected to. [more]

THE BLACKENING at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 11 Jun 2009
Compelling and challenging theatre of unease
The Blackening is named for what fire blight, a contagious disease, does to an apple tree. Or a whole orchard, in this case. A family of brothers is similarly afflicted. The questions are: What caused it? Is there a cure? Can one escape? [more]

THE BLACKENING at BATS

Startling, puzzling, powerful
In the hazy evening light are two brothers, one ominously sharpening an axe. The tension is broken and then instantly increased by the arrival of a third man, who it turns out is Mal (Jed Brophy), the eldest brother, returning home to their apple orchard after 10 years absence. Like the orchard, Mal is infected with his own form of fire blight ... [more]

THE BLACKENING at BATS

Deeply disturbing
The Blackening is one of the most polished productions you’ll see this year, with its abundance of Chapman Tripp Award winning designers and Bruce Mason Playwright Award winning writer Paul Rothwell. It is also one of the most deeply disturbing. [more]
