CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF at Maidment
reviewed by Paul Simei-Barton (New Zealand Herald) 14 Jul 2008
‘Cat’ a hot production half a century on from Broadway debut
Fifty-three years after the Broadway premiere of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Auckland Theatre Company's revival of the American classic eloquently affirms that Tennessee Williams still matters. [more]

THE PIED PIPER at University Theatre, the Arts Centre
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 14 Jul 2008
Inventive entertainment marred by recorded pipe
For a large cast, the University Theatre is a tricky space to negotiate. The seating, part of an old lecture theatre, is steeply raked and the performing space itself is shallow, with limited access. A first impression of this production though, was how well the awkwardness had been overcome. For the audience becomes part of the mountain wall into which the fated children of Hamelin followed the magician Piper and the stage itself is transformed into a cleverly perspectived street with many entrances. AUNTIE MCDUFF’S MAGICAL TRUNK at Court One
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 14 Jul 2008
Making up new stories with a bevy of wacky characters
Nowhere is the audience more wholehearted and bursting with belief than in the five minutes before a promised theatre adventure takes over the stage. No polite murmurings here, no discreet sharing of programmes or settling of coats. Excited anticipation is already high when a vast trunk is wheeled on to the appropriately fictionalised set of Arsenic and Old Lace, currently playing in the evenings at Court One. [more]

METAMORPHOSIS at BATS
reviewed by Jackson Coe (Salient) 14 Jul 2008
Change must be embraced
If you were to wake tomorrow and realise you were different to what you knew, how would you deal with it? And how would you expect the people around you, those closest to you and whom you love the most, to handle this change? This change could come from a range of forces - for instance, maybe your job changes how think or act. Metamorphosis deals with this theme of change in a very physical sense, where the central character wakes to find that he has become a bizarre beetle-like creature overnight. [more]

HINEPAU at Capital E

She’s smart, funny, pretty hot and misunderstood
For those of us who were starting to wonder why the hell all of these skateboards, hoodies and loud laughter have materialised on Cuba St during the daytimes this past week, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that it is school holidays. So, for those of you who know or have children of your own, why not shuffle them down to some of the great kids theatre that’s on offer? [more]

THE SNOW QUEEN at Wellington Performing Arts Centre
reviewed by Jackson Coe (Salient) 14 Jul 2008
Hidden meanings a worry
The Snow Queen, produced by Kapital Kids Theatre and performed at the Wellington Performing Arts Centre, is another of the shows on offer for the school holidays. This one is much more caricatured and cartoon-like - you might say it’s more what you would expect from a kids show. [more]

CINDERELLA ON ICE at ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre
reviewed by Felicity Molloy 14 Jul 2008
A unique chance to celebrate timelessness
The Imperial Ice Stars production of Cinderella on Ice is a sight to behold. Extensive attention to legend and detail has brought this production into alignment with dreams of childhood. Dance in theatre or as a spectacle, as with any visual art form, most often extends itself beyond what the audience can physically do. This performance is beautiful and evocative of pantomimes from childhood – children in this audience and they were gasping and so was I! [more]

CINDERELLA ON ICE at ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre

Thrilling blend of ice skating, ballet and theatre
It’s difficult to describe a performance of Cinderella on Ice without using words like “magical” or “sumptuous” or a phrase like “spell-binding”. In my case the spell the Imperial Ice Stars cast over their audience was frequently broken by interjections from my young daughter who was so impressed by the splendid experience that she could not contain her delight. If you have ever been impressed watching Olympic ice skating on TV, then Cinderella on Ice is even better, mixing of the magic of theatre with the thrill of ice skating. [more]

CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF at Maidment

A solid classic
Brick is a troubled young ex-sports hero who drinks, and has broken his leg recently in a drunken hurdling escapade. Maggie, his estranged yet determined and devoted wife, never stops trying to break through Brick’s impenetrable wall. Brick’s father, known to all as Big Daddy, who’s turning sixty five this night, is not in the best of health to say the least ... [more]

A VOTE FOR CYNTHIA at Circa One

A dotty comedy to clear the blues
The bad news is that Cynthia Fortitude’s magnum opus is on hold. Balls!, the first rugby opera, is unlikely to see the light of day unless she wins the forthcoming general election and becomes P.M. [more]
