THE CAPE at The Forge at The Court Theatre
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 5 Jul 2008
All the rashness, exaggeration, facile sarcasm and fragility of youth
The Cape, in the words of the playwright, “is about all the journeys we make – mental, metaphorical, physical and the final spiritual one we are prepared for, or not prepared for.” The specific journey on which we hitch our evening jaunt is undertaken by four almost mates, sharing a car ride north. Their stated destination is Cape Reinga, where conflicting currents meet and where, in Maori lore, the spirits born of Aotearoa depart for a different realm. It is also a milestone on the way to self discovery for the four young men who drive the plot. [more]

PUSS ’N BOOTS at Tararua Tramping Club, Mt Victoria
reviewed by John Smythe 5 Jul 2008
Well worth braving the elements
A packed hall of eager children lapped up the opening performance of KizStuff’s Puss ’n Boots.* Some were so eager to answer questions and offer suggestions that a total departure from the script into a ‘theatresports’-style improv almost seemed in order. As it was the actors did a good job of accommodating the chaos while staying on track. [more]

THE ILLUSION at Te Whaea - The Garage, 11 Hutchison Rd, Newtown
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 3 Jul 2008
Emotions and magic collide in lively work
The play Tony Kushner wrote before he wrote the play that made him famous, Angels in America, was a free adaptation of Pierre Corneille’s only comedy L’Illusion Comique, which, like other plays of the 16th and 17th centuries (and the 21st), explores theatrical conventions, illusion and reality, the evanescence of memory and the function of theatre. BEAST at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Sian Robertson 3 Jul 2008
Classic horror/thriller also funny, a scream in fact
Two brothers and a sister hit the road north to attend a funeral … Travelling without a map, they take a wrong turn … To say Thomas Sainsbury is an exciting new talent in New Zealand theatre is an understatement. He’s the most challenging, down-to-earth, funny and refreshingly unsettling playwright/ director I’ve come across in years … [more]

THE ILLUSION at Te Whaea - The Garage, 11 Hutchison Rd, Newtown
reviewed by John Smythe 2 Jul 2008
A worthy challenge
... In the first instance, The Illusion depicts how Alcandre, a magician, helps Pridamant a distraught father and lawyer who is facing his own mortality, catch up with the fortunes of his estranged son and heir, by conjuring up scenes of the life he has lived over the 15 years they have been lost to each other ... HANSEL AND GRETEL at The Centre
reviewed by Penny Dodd 1 Jul 2008
Engaging, charming, chilling at times and full of life and old fashioned glee
A cast of five, a pared down orchestra and a set of bold, effective components make for the perfect touring package for NBR NZ Opera and the audiences fortunate enough to see this fresh production of a well loved classic. [more]

Brunnhilde on a broomstick with provocative pantomime flavour
NBR NZ Opera is on the road. Michael Hurst's hi-energy production of Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel premiered to a full house in Kerikeri on Sunday night and is ready to take on the country. [more]

FINDING MURDOCH at Musgrove Studio, Maidment Theatre
reviewed by Paul Simei-Barton (New Zealand Herald) 30 Jun 2008
Cast finds disgraced player who ‘went bush’
Keith Murdoch's controversial dismissal from the 1972 All Black touring squad after an altercation with a Welsh security guard should have become an inconsequential footnote to the colourful history of New Zealand rugby. [more]

ARSENIC AND OLD LACE at Court One
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 30 Jun 2008
To cheer a winter evening
Like apple pie and favourite old-time tunes, some plays are simply too good to be left behind. As a sort of comfort food for theatre goers they bring reminders of what now seem more innocent times when there were still manners to make comedy of. So it is with Arsenic and Old Lace, a delirious romp through the secrets and preoccupations of an old established Brooklyn family, allowing pot shots en route at all manner of institutions and social expectations. ARSENIC AND OLD LACE at Court One
reviewed by Alan Scott (The Press) 30 Jun 2008
Arsenic, old lace and plenty of laughs
I reviewed this play six years ago and found it funny. I found it even funnier last night. This says a lot for a nearly 70-year-old play which, stylistically and thematically, is clearly a work of its own day. [more]
