GUY WILLIAMS HAS WON AN AWARD at Thistle Hall
reviewed by Simon Howard 12 May 2013
Entertaining and likeable
Starting off by interacting with his audience and making jokes about Hamilton, Williams gets the audience onside with his wit and engaging style. Wearing a Game of Thrones t-shirt gives him scope to talk about his love of the show, and how difficult it is to recommend to anyone else, given its graphic content. [more]

STEVE HUGHES IN BIG ISSUES at San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba St
reviewed by Simon Howard 14 May 2013
Seriously funny
Steve Hughes is a commanding presence on the stand-up circuit. Making his entrance with no introduction, he takes us on a lengthy look at some of the big issues affecting society today. Warming the audience up with a heady mix of jokes at the expense of his homeland of Australia, whilst describing the mythical qualities of New Zealand, Hughes hits the mark straight away, setting the scene for the bigger issues. SAM SMITH IN SAMANTICS at Kitty O'Sheas, 28 Courtenay Place
reviewed by Shannon Friday 1 May 2013
A little bit witty, a little bit self-depreciating, and a lot mischief
Samantics, Smith's first solo show, is about the “games and jokes” he likes to play on the people around him, and he reaches a near-religious – if somewhat tongue-in-cheek – fervor in wanting to see these games spread. [more]

ADAM WRIGHT AND RICK THRELFO IN GLORIOUSLY AVERAGE at Cavern Club, 22 Allen St
reviewed by Shannon Friday 11 May 2013
Like a sour-sweet lemon cake?
The show actually starts with the host, Rob Harris, doing 5 minutes of warm-up comedy. He does his job well, jumping between a couple of topics to find what gets us all laughing. A bit about cigarette packet warnings gets us nice and toasty. [more]

ANDY CLAY’S BOOK OF LOVE at Q Theatre Loft, 305 Queen St
reviewed by Matt Baker (TheatreScenes - the Auckland Theatre Blog) 29 Apr 2013
A novel comedy
Four years after being nominated for Best Show in the NZ International Comedy Festival, Andy Clay’s Book of Love returns for its second season. Presented not as a one-man reading, but more of a self-help seminar, the show is broken into ten chapters, with Clay enthusiastically rattling off a great variety of hilarious observations and one-liners. Although said enthusiasm resulted in him speeding through and tripping over some lines, none were lost, and, more importantly, his exaggerated persona came across. [more]

JAMES ROQUE IS CHICKEN! at Brooklyn Bar - 57 Lorne St
reviewed by Matt Baker (TheatreScenes - the Auckland Theatre Blog) 16 May 2013
Clucking good fun
“What do I really wanna say that I’m afraid to say?” In his eulogy for George Carlin, Louis CK noted that what made the late comedian better every year was his constant digging deeper for new material; from jokes about airplanes and dogs, to feelings and who you are, to fears and nightmares. With that in mind, 21 year old comedian James Roque dive bombs into the deep end by confronting his greatest fears in his Auckland Comedy Festival stand-up show. [more]

EWEN GILMOUR’S MIDLIFE CIRCUS at San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba St
reviewed by Nancy Catherine Fulford 9 May 2013
Well structured, accessible, f*ckin’ funny Westie humour
Ewen Gilmore’s show Midlife Circus is f*ckin’ funny. I don’t usually swear, but after last night, I quite like it. It’s relaxing and reminds me of Ewen and what a great time I had. Man it was funny. But not just funny: it was clever. [more]

ELI MATTHEWSON IN PROPOSITION: GREAT! at Cavern Club, 22 Allen St
reviewed by Stewart Lund 1 May 2013
The genuine humour of honesty
We are treated to amusing anecdotes, music, and a truly heartfelt and warming story that can only be summed up as love. As he said near the start, he is still not quite an adult at heart, and perhaps once he better finds his footing, he will improve. [more]

GORDON SOUTHERN THE KERFUFFLE at Cavern Club, 22 Allen St
reviewed by Stewart Lund 1 May 2013
Reasonably clean, clever and thoroughly entertaining
Gordon Southern likes New Zealand and is happy to keep coming back, which is something we should be very happy about. He bounds onto the stage exuding confidence and smugness (something to which he happily admits during the show) and rattles out an hour of constant hilarity in his relatively new show, The Kerfuffle. NICK RADO IN THE FUNNIEST JOKE IN THE WORLD at Fringe Bar, Cnr Cuba & Vivian

Good, clean, easy laughs
Nick Rado has been a major player in the New Zealand 'bar-stand-up' comedy scene for a number of years now, having won several awards for best MC from the NZ Comedy Guild, and being nominated for the prestigious Billy T Award back in 2011. [more]
