A unique chance to celebrate timelessness The Imperial Ice Stars production of Cinderella on Ice is a sight to behold. Extensive attention to legend and detail has brought this production into alignment with dreams of childhood. Dance in theatre or as a spectacle, as with any visual art form, most often extends itself beyond what the audience can physically do. This performance is beautiful and evocative of pantomimes from childhood – children in this audience and they were gasping and so was I! [more] |

Thrilling blend of ice skating, ballet and theatre It’s difficult to describe a performance of Cinderella on Ice without using words like “magical” or “sumptuous” or a phrase like “spell-binding”. In my case the spell the Imperial Ice Stars cast over their audience was frequently broken by interjections from my young daughter who was so impressed by the splendid experience that she could not contain her delight. If you have ever been impressed watching Olympic ice skating on TV, then Cinderella on Ice is even better, mixing of the magic of theatre with the thrill of ice skating. [more] |

A dotty comedy to clear the blues The bad news is that Cynthia Fortitude’s magnum opus is on hold. Balls!, the first rugby opera, is unlikely to see the light of day unless she wins the forthcoming general election and becomes P.M. [more] |

Mystery and fun for the kids The fairy tales of Hans Christian Anderson are full of magic, mystery and adventure and as such are ideal for adaptations into engaging pieces of theatre. The Snow Queen with its seven interlinking stories is one of the more complex but in this adaptation by Anna Burns for Kapital Kids Theatre, the story has been pared down to its essential elements without losing any of Anderson’s charm and magic. Stylish with substance Hinepau is a stylishly presented, sophisticated piece of work that contains moments of beauty and technological wizardry as well as a highly relevant message about the environment. First presented in 2005 by Capital E, it is the tale of an outsider, someone who is different. In Hinepau’s case she is eventually excluded from her tribe because she is a brilliant weaver, has red hair, and protests when a giant totara is felled in the forest. [more] |

Bubbling fun with dubious moral The actors in Puss ‘n Boots will have to be on their toes if their audiences are as quick as the audience at the first performance. “That’s a rubber chicken!” shouted one boy when we were informed it was a plucked pheasant, and when we were warned that Igor the Ogre was scary someone announced calmly that he didn’t think he was scary at all. Refreshing liberation from naturalism Simon Vincent is vocally and physically superb as Gregor, making designer Brian King’s ‘infinity tunnel’ of scaffolding his natural habitat as he climbs, slides, hangs, scampers … Flipped on his back on the floor, his helpless paddling of the air is simultaneously agonising and impressive. He completely inhabits the role, demanding our empathy no matter how monstrous he becomes. [more] |

A good story well told Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen is an epic story made up of seven tales. Anna Elizabeth Burns – who also plays the title role and three others – has done a good job of adapting it for five actors (including the stage manager, Woody Tuhiwai), who play 15 characters between them, some as puppets. Dirty, dusty – and funny What a crowd-pleaser. The theatre was packed, and people were laughing themselves silly. Dirty Dusting, by British playwrights Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood, has clearly clicked with local audiences. [more] |
