![]() NICK RADO IN THE FUNNIEST JOKE IN THE WORLD at Fringe Bar, Cnr Cuba & Vivian reviewed by Stewart Lund 2 May 2013 |
Good, clean, easy laughs Nick Rado has been a major player in the New Zealand 'bar-stand-up' comedy scene for a number of years now, having won several awards for best MC from the NZ Comedy Guild, and being nominated for the prestigious Billy T Award back in 2011. [more] |
![]() TOM GREEN at Opera House reviewed by Stewart Lund 6 May 2013 |
One for the fans Tom Green is crazy, crass and pretty funny too. I have to say I had no expectations upon seeing his only show in Wellington, having not seen his self proclaimed "most critically reviled film of all time, Freddy Got Fingered" which Green wrote, directed and starred in. [more] |
![]() CHRIS MARTIN IN SPOT THE DIFFERENCE at San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba St reviewed by Stewart Lund 9 May 2013 |
Personal stories and opinionated rants Even after embarrassingly mistaking a couple of friends for a mother and daughter, he is happy to make fun of his own mistake and point out that perhaps he is slowly, "losing members of the audience" with the errors he does make. [more] |
![]() TJ MCDONALD AND NICK GIBB IN ANGLO SEXIN’ at Fringe Bar, Cnr Cuba & Vivian reviewed by Stewart Lund 15 May 2013 |
Worth a look As a whole, however, the audience seems to respond best to Nick Gibb, but for me, McDonald is the better on the night. [more] |
![]() CLASS COMEDIANS 2012 GRADUATES ARE UNDERAGE, ENRAGED AND UNCAGED at The Basement Studio, Lower Greys Ave reviewed by Jan Maree 3 May 2013 |
Gotta love these young guns having a go But what do you do if you want to keep going at comedy? Hook up with the other keen beans and put on a show. So, very simply The 2012 Graduates we are seated to meet are just that: six graduates of last year’s programme with (supposedly) more experience under their belts and some sparkling new gags to wow and entertain. ![]() TIM BATT IN TIM BATT'S UNIFIED THEORY at Brooklyn Bar - 57 Lorne St reviewed by Jan Maree 3 May 2013 |
His first will not be his last A rangy fella with googly eyes, Tim looks like comedy. And if you hadn't noticed he points it out. His well-crafted self-deprecation leaves the audience warmed to him. Tim has an obvious simpatico, a wealth of human-ness, which in all honesty is necessary as he proceeds to tear apart the very fabric of society and all its foibles. [more] |
![]() THE 5PM PROJECT at Q Theatre. Rangatira - return season reviewed by Jan Maree 4 May 2013 |
Guy plus guys Hosted by comedy darling Guy Williams, The 5pm Project is aimed at a slightly younger comedy audience, and they are out in numbers for this one-off clean* comedy showcase. A super initiative to bring the under 18 year olds into the live comedy environment, a place they would not normally be able to be, given that so many venues are restricted to 18+. [more] |
![]() LATE LAUGHS 2013 at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave reviewed by Jan Maree 4 May 2013 |
Hot talent offers good value nightcap This is the first Late Laughs showcase of the festival and there is a crackling excitement brewing in the audience. This is the show where you will experience the edgier material, the controversial taboos blown wide open, the seamier more adult conventions of comedy and most definitely the 'C' word. [more] |
![]() GORDON SOUTHERN THE KERFUFFLE at The Classic Studio reviewed by Jan Maree 7 May 2013 |
Honest humour I like Gordon Southern. He has three of the most important traits that I believe a comedian should have: he is charming, energetic and genuine. Having enjoyed watching him on stage as part of a line up or solo, I have come to expect that I'll always be left smiling afterwards. [more] |
![]() THE BIG SHOW 2013 at Comedy Chamber, Town Hall, THE EDGE reviewed by Jan Maree 7 May 2013 |
Cross-over threads but all round good Our host Mickey D is a solid comedian with years of experience across the UK and the Pacific. He opens strongly; apologising for being Australian, and except for maybe Hamilton (note here that Hamilton takes a beating in this show) he assures us of his great love of all things Kiwi, not that he needs to win us over.
