THE CHERRY ORCHARD at ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre
reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 6 Apr 2009
Engaging relevance in lively new version of classic
Stoppard’s version of the play is lively and fluent, yet remains faithful to Chekhov’s original theme: the effect the rapid socio-economic change facing Russia in 1904 had on his countrymen – in particular, the dwindling power of the displaced aristocracy, and the emerging status of the bourgeoisie. A fruitful harvest from Chekhov’s orchard
Oh yes, we had great expectations – how could we not? The Bridge Project offers canonical plays interpreted by glamorously famous acting talent from both cultural capitals of the anglophone world – New York and London – under the direction of American Beauty's Sam Mendes. [more]

THE CHRISTMAS MONOLOGUES at The Wine Cellar, St Kevins Arcade (K Rd)
reviewed by Joanna Davies 21 Dec 2009
‘Festive fun meets the Twilight Zone’
’Tis the season for monologues. It seems everyone has something to say this Christmas, and they’re doing it one-by-one. At the beginning of the month it was the slick, in-your-face, reality-show styled Christ Almighty. Now it’s Tom Sainsbury’s The Christmas Monologues. [more]

THE CHRONICLES – LEGACY DANCE CREW at Te Whaea National Dance and Drama Centre, 11 Hutchison Rd, Newtown

Infectious joy and commitment pulls in the punters
Te Whaea was pumping last night with a full house, long waiting list and palpable excitement in the crowd – they get my vote for best audience of the Fringe. [more]

THE CLEAN HOUSE at Circa One
reviewed by John Smythe 14 Jun 2009
Bringing lightness to dirt, dust and death
The Clean House is a play that touches us in different ways and gets people talking afterwards, or it did after Circa’s opening night. Everyone I spoke to was surprised by it, in a positive way. [more]

A mix of laughter and tears
If you find there’s a shortage of apples this month you can blame The Blackening at Bats and The Clean House at Circa, for in both plays apples litter the stage and are symbols for a lost happiness in the former and a present and future happiness in the latter. [more]

Frustrating to watch
This is one of those annoying plays that changes its mind about what it is around halfway through. Having been farcically funny in the first half, we get pathos and real emotion in the second, too late for us to suddenly care about this weird mix of women and their cleaning/anti cleaning phobias. THE CLEAN HOUSE at Fortune Theatre

Exhilarating blend of fantasy and reality
Wahoo! Cries of triumph (and gasps of relief) at the successful lift-off of the Fortune’s 2007 season. After the ghastly grounding of 6 Dance Lessons in 6 Weeks with great loss of revenue and confidence, this sparkling production of The Clean House is soaring high. Its flights of fancy mingle with a poignant realism to provide an entertainment that is both funny and mind-expanding. [more]

THE CLOUDS at BATS - Out Of Site - Cnr Cuba & Dixon
reviewed by John Smythe 3 Apr 2013
Satire and surprises aplenty
The central premise is that Strepsiades (David Lawrence) wants his lazy horse-loving son Pheidippides (Julia Harrison) to go to a university presided over by Vice Chancellor Socrates (Salesi Le’ota) and graduate as a lawyer so that he can argue his way out of having to pay his debts: a clear reflection of rich list tax evaders. The more things change … [more]
