ON THE CONDITIONS AND POSSIBILITIES OF HELEN CLARK TAKING ME AS HER YOUNG LOVER at The Classic Basement (formerly Silo)
reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 7 May 2008
Complex weave of deliberate irony = unbeatable hilarity
... Taking on the role of Richard Meros, Arthur Meek barely pauses for breath, as he categorically persuades his enthusiastic and at times raucous opening night crowd, that on the conditions and possibilities of our Rt. Hon. HC taking him as her young lover, not only is he an expert on the subject and a man not to be messed with in a debate, he simply must be right. [more]

MRS. PEACOCK: SIX FEET FROM THE EDGE at Comedy Underground, 305 Queen St
reviewed by Sian Robertson 7 May 2008
Hamstrung by expectation?
Dave Smith and Jarrod Baker are ‘Mrs Peacock’ – the band that doesn’t have a front man with a huge forehead. Six Feet From The Edge is about them trying to write a rock opera... and it’s not really working for them; Dave’s talking about going overseas with his girlfriend; they don’t like each other’s ideas; they don’t have many ideas; they don’t even seem to care that much about having good ideas. IMPROV - THE ROCK OPERA at Circa Two
reviewed by John Smythe 7 May 2008
Virtually guaranteed entertainment. They rock
The indefatigable Improvisors are back in stunning form with Improv – The Rock Opera, following last year’s memorable Improv - The Musical. A blend of old hands and new blood exemplify the qualities of intelligent listening, positive responding, creative inspiration, adding value and team work as they pursue their quest to group-devise an instant Rock Opera with audience-offered elements as their inspiration. EWEN GILMOUR: YEEHA! at San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba St
reviewed by Thomas LaHood 7 May 2008
Tolerably ‘classic’
For the first time in many years, venerable old man of New Zealand stand-up Ewen Gilmour returns to Wellington. He looks especially grizzled, his paunch hangs over his belt, and he opens his set by mistakenly dousing himself with an audience member’s bottle of white wine bedraggling his appearance still further. It’s a great start, even if unintentional. But he’s not too tired and worn to deliver an hour of dependable laughs on his own terms. [more]

(NOT) THE ALL INDIA RADIO SHOW at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 7 May 2008
Not ready
In their media release, having listed their past triumphs (click on title above), The Untouchables Theatre Collective goes on to proclaim: “For their third show, they may just disappoint them all … Cast members are dropping off like flies, funding applications are being rejected and only half of the show has been written. This isn’t fake news, it’s a car crash and they’ll be bloody lucky if this thing makes it to stage!” The programme reveals (Not) the All India Radio Show was “devised over two weeks with community actors & Toi Whakaari graduates.” Two weeks”? It shows, and my inclination is to say it’s just not ready and leave it at that. [more]

STEVE WRIGLEY: THE FIRST TIME at The Classic Studio
reviewed by Sian Robertson 6 May 2008
Honest, wicked, imaginative
... Although there's a thematic thread, Wrigley's set is loosely structured and associative, trawling you energetically through the dirty laundry of his thoughts, which can be squalid and touching in equal measures, but either way, pretty damn funny. His weaknesses are his strength. [more]

CHET BAKER: LIKE SOMEONE IN LOVE at Fortune Theatre - Hutchinson Studio
reviewed by Barbara Frame (Otago Daily Times) 6 May 2008
Jazz trumpeter's fame & tragedy draws audience
The atmosphere is smoky and the lights are dim and blue. There are musical instruments, including a trumpet, on a cheap-looking bed, and there’s a little table supporting various items that can be injected, ingested or smoked. So it can only be about jazz. [more]

IMPROV ANGELS at BATS
reviewed by Uther Dean (Salient) 5 May 2008
Hilarious sheer madness
There were several points while watching The Improv Angels when I laughed so hard I couldn't see. And I wasn't alone. Which, really, is all you need to know. [more]

THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES at Maidment
reviewed by Sian Robertson 5 May 2008
Hard fast laughs from feminism
Loosely based on an incident in which Germaine Greer was attacked in her holiday home by a crazed student, The Female of the Species doesn’t claim to be a biography, nor an academic exploration of feminism, but rather a scenario ripe with satirical potential, reaching riotously farcical proportions. THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES at Maidment
reviewed by Shannon Huse (New Zealand Herald) 5 May 2008
Hits comedy heights
Say the word feminism and comedy is the last thing on anyone's mind. But Joanna Murray-Smith's The Female of the Species, Auckland Theatre Company's newest show at the Maidment Theatre, makes the "f" word funny thanks to its mix of high thinking and low comedy. [more]
