THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES at Maidment
reviewed by Shannon Huse (New Zealand Herald) 5 May 2008
Hits comedy heights
Say the word feminism and comedy is the last thing on anyone's mind. But Joanna Murray-Smith's The Female of the Species, Auckland Theatre Company's newest show at the Maidment Theatre, makes the "f" word funny thanks to its mix of high thinking and low comedy. [more]

JULIA MORRIS (AUSTRALIA) at The Classic
reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 5 May 2008
Warm, open and amusing sarcasm and cynicism
Australian motor-mouth Julia Morris burst on stage looking like she’d just come from a cocktail party. Bubbly and vivacious, she took her capacity opening night audience on a rapid whirlwind global tour of her on-stage and off-stage experiences as a one of the comedy circuit’s most popular female stand up comedians. CHET BAKER: LIKE SOMEONE IN LOVE at Blondini's Bar, Embassy Theatre
reviewed by Jackson Coe (Salient) 5 May 2008
A superb production
…At Blondini’s … David Goldthorpe’s solo act about Chet Baker, Like Someone In Love, is seeing a return season after last years Fringe Festival – and deservedly so. With smooth jazz sounds and a crystal chandelier hanging above us, this show does for theatre what velvet does for underpants; and if you haven’t tried velvet underwear, I suggest you do so soon. JOSIE LONG: TRYING IS GOOD (UK) at BATS
reviewed by Thomas LaHood 4 May 2008
Passing on the inspiration
Delightfully, disarmingly and charmingly barmy, Josie Long embodies remarkably well the spirit of her show – that effort is sublime, even and perhaps especially when it’s misplaced. The show is an effervescent seminar on the topic of inspiration, and it’s brimming over. Long clearly has her own inspiration on tap, as she has enough material to fill several shows packed into her hour at Bats. [more]

PILOBOLUS DANCE THEATRE at ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre
reviewed by Felicity Molloy 2 May 2008
Swimming alongside NZ Dance
Choreography: a blast from the past – no doubt about it. Pilobolus was showing me moves I distinctly remember doing twenty years ago in Limbs er.. Maybe twenty five? Did Douglas (Wright) copy them or did they copy Douglas?? [more]

NIK COPPIN IN SPIDERS, MAN (UK) at The Transmission Room
reviewed by Nik Smythe 2 May 2008
Just relax, man
Regular mid thirties London geezer Nik Coppin has stopped off in Kiwiland on his international comedy circuit travels to tell us a bit about stuff like what he thinks about, and to try and pick up our accent ... [more]

COHEN HOLLOWAY’S HYPNOTASTIC TOUR 2008 at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 2 May 2008
Props save oh-so-silly show
Hypnotastic is all about mind control and the expose of the suppressed thoughts and desires of carefully selected plants in the audience despite the programme telling us that the 2004 Billy T Award nominee, Cohen Holloway, has dedicated many weeks to becoming the country’s No 1 faux stage hypnotist and that his show may not include any actual hypnotism at all. THE PARADIGMS OF THE SQUARE at Bar Bodega, Room 101
reviewed by John Smythe 2 May 2008
Square whatsit in the proverbial round thing?
First a brickbat to the Bar Bodega venue, or rather the young basement barman who banged doors, and clinked glasses (taking trays from a dishwasher) and bottles without the slightest awareness his customers, just a metre or three away, were attempting to engage with a live show. Either he or Bodega should refund the venue hire they charged ShadowFlare Productions last night (Thursday). [more]

DAVID O’DOHERTY: IT’S DAVID O’DOHERTY TIME (IRELAND) at San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba St
reviewed by Thomas LaHood 1 May 2008
Timely observations but ticks off audience
“The way you can tell that somebody didn’t like your set,” opines O’Doherty towards the finale of his opening night performance, “is if they tell you afterwards ‘there was a guy next to me who absolutely loved it.’” He was a feeling a bit upset, because he genuinely couldn’t tell if the audience had enjoyed the show. True, the punters were displaying that awful Wellington trait of quietly appreciating everything until the final ‘curtain’ when they erupt into rapturous applause. But David, take it from me, we loved it ... [more]

SIMON MCKINNEY: LAND OF THE LONG WHITE CLOWN at The Classic Studio
reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 1 May 2008
Intelligent gem
Simon McKinney is a really nice, polite guy – like the ‘boy next door’ you know Mum & Dad would love to meet. But can nice & polite be funny? Oh yes. [more]
