![]() SIMON MCKINNEY: LAND OF THE LONG WHITE CLOWN at The Classic Studio reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 1 May 2008 |
|
Intelligent gem Simon McKinney is a really nice, polite guy – like the ‘boy next door’ you know Mum & Dad would love to meet. But can nice & polite be funny? Oh yes. [more] |

Ah, youth ... Last year’s Class Comedians showcase performers return this year with High School Comical, a bona-fide professional comedy show by crikey. Although the atmosphere and support network available in a large scale festival is surely a great asset for fledgling comedy artists, still my hat goes off to the courage and fortitude displayed by the Ad-lol-escents. ![]() FUNK RABBIT (CANADA) at Comedy Underground, 305 Queen St reviewed by Nik Smythe 1 May 2008 |
|
An all-too-short hour of unrelenting hilarity In other reviews of improv shows I have despaired at the shallowness that is seemingly inherent in the form. Julian and Derek, the Canadian cast of Funk Rabbit, have addressed this issue to some degree. It doesn’t exactly increase the levels of meaning or deeper insight, but the whole exercise carries more depth of field if you like. [more] |

Ho-hum bigotry + rapid fire gags Simple two-header standup show this, first one, then the other, half an hour each. [more] |

Footnote is miraculous Launching in time for New Zealand music month, this programme celebrates homegrown music and dance. Dancing their hearts out in a nearly 2 hour programme this company of strong, lithe and generous performers are stunning! [more] |

Purveyors of an old tradition Kiev ballet dancers are great technically, shiny, with generations of dance technique scored on their bodies; they could probably dance that ballet in their sleep and at times they were (metaphorically - I know I know!) So I got to thinking… [more] |
![]() THE ETHNIC ULTIMATUM at Comedy Underground, 305 Queen St reviewed by Jessie Kollen 1 May 2008 |
|
Guaranteed laughter The Ethnic Ultimatum are three short, young comedians from different ethnic backgrounds. This gives them the excuse to make as many jokes about themselves as they want, and that's what they do, with huge success. [more] |
![]() STEVE WRIGLEY: THE FIRST TIME at Bluenote Bar reviewed by John Smythe 1 May 2008 |
|
Touching humour After warming us up some more with his random thoughts, Wrigley gets into his chosen subject – a range of first time experiences: sex the first time ever; first one night stand; first time he did it with someone he really loved … [more] |
![]() JIMEOIN ON ICE (IRE/AUS) at SKYCITY Theatre reviewed by Nik Smythe 30 Apr 2008 |
|
Inane genius Despite his long term relationship with Auckland’s Comedy Festival this is the first time I have had the privilege of the humour of Jimeoin, seemingly at once laid back and easygoing, and possibly dangerous given the baldness and the Irish accent. [more] |
![]() JANEY GODLEY IN TELL IT LIKE IT IS (SCOTLAND) at The Classic Basement (formerly Silo) reviewed by Nik Smythe 30 Apr 2008 |
|
Laugh out loud funny Breaking news: Janey Godley has been voted the 3rd funniest comedian in the UK in a TimeOut readers poll. The only woman to make the list, she doesn’t even getting around to mentioning that herself, too busy chatting up the poor defenceless lighting boy. [more] |
