DOSTOEVSKY TRIP at Happy (Cnr Tory & Vivian)
reviewed by Jackson Coe 14 Feb 2008
Variation lacking
Connecting literature and hallucinogenic drugs is a clever and witty way to explore the writing of Fyodor Dostoevsky, and while I’m convinced that the director had an effective vision in mind for Dostoevsky Trip, I fear that sometime during the rehearsal process his vision must have absconded. THE KETTLE OF ALLEN AND MAX at The Adelaide, 114 Adelaide Rd, Newtown
reviewed by Jackson Coe 21 Feb 2008
Glimmers of potential
The script has potential, but would be suited better as a television sitcom. At times I felt that a laugh track would have been in order. The show is unnecessarily long, and could do with half the amount of words rather than a ten minute interval. [more]

CURIOUS? at Gryphon
reviewed by Jackson Coe 22 Feb 2008
Provocative, gutsy, brave
Personal secrets and tasty sex lives are all revealed in Curious?, a titillating new Fringe Festival show devised and presented by Stepping Stone Productions. Curious? tackles the immense topic of human sexuality head-on, offering a bold discussion of some of our most private and intimate secrets. [more]

THE YOUNG & THE WITLESS; AN IMPROVISED SOAP OPERA at Bluenote Bar
reviewed by Jackson Coe 29 Feb 2008
Formidable and funny
The Wellington Improvisation Troupe (W.I.T.)’s performance of The Young and The Witless last night, which is approaching the end of its 8-show run, was testimony to the 9-strong group’s fine skills as improvisational performers. [more]

REQUIEM at Mary Hopewell Theatre
reviewed by Barbara Snook 10 Apr 2008
Inspired and inspiring
The program begins with Quintet by Jan Bolwell. This beautifully crafted work begins joyously with Bolwell dancing a solo introduction, radiating strength and experience. Her eye contact with the audience is cheeky and challenging. [more]

Tentalising
Expectant murmurings amongst the audience are matched by murmurings within a tent, pitched centre stage and illuminated from within. Muttered voices and morepork calls set the scene and a shadowy evening light outlines the dancers as they emerge one by one into our world. As the tent is dismantled and shrugged away the foetal curve of a curled sleeping figure is discovered. [more]

HARMONIOUS ODDITY at Maidment
reviewed by Felicity Molloy 2 Oct 2008
Memorable theatrical feast
Touch Compass have undergone a metamorphosis. The core dancers have remained the same and the newer dancers fit beautifully with the company’s movement ranges and style, but the dance itself has shifted. [more]

MAPUNAPUNA at The Auckland Performing Arts Centre: TAPAC
reviewed by Felicity Molloy 2 Oct 2008
Decidedly and richly entertaining
Some artists can make a dark thing light; dark, not as in lack of light, nor light as in superfluous humour but more about shades. In this performance of Atamira Dance Collective it seems more about the shades of time. [more]

Improvisations of compelling beauty
This new work devised by Michael Parmenter is built from studio improvisation techniques with a cast of eight dancers – Craig Bary, Victoria Columbus, Sarah Foster, Justin Haiu, Claire Lissaman, Destiny Stein, Adam Synnott, Christopher Tandy. The dancers work in a strong team, anticipating and relating to each other’s moves as though they had been performing together for years. [more]

A new vitality and youthful exuberance but lacks cohesion
This eagerly awaited work by Michael Parmenter is a collaborative choreographic effort by himself and the eight dancers that comprise Commotion’s current line-up. As such it is a mixed bag. [more]
