The Real New Zealand Festival
THE FIRST ASIAN AB at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 26 Sep 2011
Winning charm from the light touch at Bats
The First Asian AB, the second of three plays involving rugby that are being presented at Bats during the World Cup, is a two-hander that is 10 minutes longer than a rugby game and has no half-time, though oranges are offered to the audience at the end. [more]

Not about the rugby
Renee Liang has written a lot about the Asian New Zealand experience and her work always hits a nerve. She doesn’t lecture, nor does she flinch from reminding us that as a country we can still have a ‘them and us’ mentality that stops us being truly multi-cultural. [more]

Only a bit of rugby, but a lot of insights
With a promising title, perfect timing and a killer concept, you might expect playwright Renee Liang to be a contender in Plays of the Week. But anyone who feels the national game hasn't been getting enough attention lately will be disappointed to find that The First Asian ABis not really a play about rugby. [more]

THE FIRST ASIAN AB at Victorian Garden Conservatory, Hamilton gardens
reviewed by Mark Houlahan 23 Feb 2012
Local bromance a winning combo
It won’t happen overnight, as they say, but it will happen. Sooner or later a New Zealander of Asian descent will become a proud All Black. Where will he come from? How will he have learnt the arcane arts of the rugby field? How will his family deal to this? What, indeed, becomes of all those rugby dreamers? [more]

Plenty of laughs and a whole lot of honesty
Between them, writer Renee Liang and director Edward Peni have created genuine, atypical-Kiwi characters who are deftly brought to life by Benjamin Teh (Willie) and Paul Fagamalo (Mook). [more]

THE FLYING KIWI CIRCUS at Celebration Theatre, Hagley Park
reviewed by Elizabeth O’Connor 18 Jul 2011
A skills-based show with impressive comic elements
Four circus aficionados made homeless by earthquake damage to the CircoArts building at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT) have created a company, offering shows, workshops and visits to schools and organisations. [more]

THE FOREIGN MONOLOGUES at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Sian Robertson 26 May 2011
The only thing you risk is your time
This is the latest instalment in the ‘Monologues’ series, directed by Thomas Sainsbury and showcasing the work of new writers. For most of them it’s their first time writing for the stage. [more]

THE FROG PRINCE at Fortune Theatre
reviewed by Sharon Matthews 30 Jun 2010
Totally recommended
The Frog Prince is a truly wonderful piece of children's theatre, perfectly pitched to please a younger audience, and with enough delightfully clever comic action to keep any adult minders amused and appreciative. And, ummm, just in case you were wondering, no-one paid me to say that. [more]

Energetic, witty and often stylish
How perverse to play The Frogs first up in the Fringe Since 2,400-odd years ago it heralded the binge Of Dionysian revels to counter tripled tragedies Levitating Athenian moods with satire played to please. [more]

THE FROGS UNDER THE WATERFRONT at Meet at Mac's Brewery
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 4 Feb 2009
Memorable leap into the underworld
On Monday evening, along with 24 other “dead souls,” I was ferried across the lake that borders the Underworld by Chorus (Amelia Calder) acting as Charon and five fluorescent coloured frogs. An exciting and unusual theatrical experience, particularly as I wasn’t expecting a full version of The Frogs in a very free and easy translation with many topical references ... [more]
