THE BECKONING OF HOPE at BATS
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 20 Feb 2008
Committed performance cannot make flawed play gel
The Beckoning of Hope at Bats theatre looks at the life of the wife of exiled Russian Poet Osip Mandelshtam and the Stalin regime. Michael Burton’s play has been adapted for a solo actor by Marjorie McKee, so I’m not sure whether it’s the original concept or the adaptation that’s the problem here. [more]

BABYCAKES at BATS
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 20 Feb 2008
Undemanding romp
Babycakes is an undemanding invitation to the wedding table from hell, where a reunion of old call centre workmates turns into a slanging match. Georgina Titheridge goes for easy laughs and stereotypes (and that’s ok if, as it did on opening night, it gets the audience laughing). [more]

THE NOMINAL SPACE at BATS
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 20 Feb 2008
Stays in your mind
You need your wits about you for The Nominal Space by Stephen Townshend (writer/actor). He keeps you guessing, and involved, right until the last scene in a short work structured with mathematical precision. [more]

SHIPWRECKED BENEATH THE STARS at BATS
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 20 Feb 2008
Script not well served
Shipwrecked Beneath the Stars is less than convincing, though the idea for the setting is terrific – on board the King Kong boat during filming. [more]

ENGAGED at Michael Fowler Centre Foyer, Ladies Toilets
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 27 Feb 2008
Intriguing, unnerving and voyeuristic
We’ve been to Fringe shows in a lingerie shop, a Laundromat, travel agent’s, cafes, central city office – it was only a matter of time until we were ushered into a toilet. [more]

SENSIBLE SUSAN & THE QUEEN'S MERKIN: A MORALITY PLAY at BATS
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 27 Feb 2008
A sheer pleasure to watch
Sensible Susan and the Queen’s Mirkin, directed by Rachel Lenart and the sixth and latest mind-bending offering from Theatre Militia, is the show to beat all Fringe shows this year, so far at least. [more]

STEP UP DARLINGS, IT’S TEN-IN-ONE! at BATS
reviewed by Lynn Freeman 27 Feb 2008
Flair and guts
Step up Darlings is….well it’s…..how can I best describe it….the three women…..you see they…. OK, it’s not that baffling but it is different, in your face and hard to sum up. [more]

BLINKERS at BATS
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 5 Mar 2008
Irresistible humour and pathos
Blinkers is the kind of Fringe show you know will come at you when you least expect it, just when spirits are flagging and festival related sleep deprivation have kicked in. It’s what Eagle Vs Shark should have been, with two lonely crazy souls have a chance to get together and find happiness in a world not designed for them and their eccentricities. [more]

CHARLIE at BATS
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 5 Mar 2008
Flat and clunky despite explosions of emotion
Charlie is written and directed by Fleur Fitzpatrick. It’s R16 – containing offensive language & nudity, so that’s a potential drawcard. It’s not dissimilar territory to the excellent film, Dead Man Walking, and suffers in comparison. [more]

HAIL TO THE THIEF at BATS
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 5 Mar 2008
Uneven despite some great performances
Philip Braithwaite has a genuinely original mind, but it can be a touch hit and miss. Hail to the Thief is a bitser of a play – a bit of drama, a bit of satire, a bit of history mixed in with contemporary references. [more]
