WHICH WITCH IS WHICH? at Tararua Tramping Club, Mt Victoria
reviewed by John Smythe 20 Apr 2008
Apparently traditional yet brand new
KidzStuff Theatre’s holiday offering is a new work, written by Rob Ormsby, made to look like an old folk tale except without the extremes of good and evil, scary bits or a even (perish the thought) a hero. [more]

TALE OF A DOG at Capital E
reviewed by John Smythe 20 Apr 2008
A winning combination
Once more Capital E writer/director Peter Wilson has collaborated with a highly talented creative team to develop a gem of a show, pitched at 2 to 7 year-olds but entertaining for all ages. [more]

XXX TONY LEE: AGGRESSIVE COMEDY HYPNOSIS at SKYCITY Theatre
reviewed by Nik Smythe 20 Apr 2008
Rather grotesque and often pornographic
... Lee enters in a whirlwind, immediately foisting his advertised aggressive personality upon us, crudely chatting up audience members’ girlfriends and so on. He quickly and crassly lays down the ground rules regarding who should not participate … [more]

PAUL TONKINSON (UK) at The Classic
reviewed by Sian Robertson 20 Apr 2008
Something for everyone
Then when he’s sure he’s got us eating out of his hand a mischievous streak creeps in and the gloves come off, one at a time. It’s his first time in New Zealand and he’s persistent, energetic and completely at ease. [more]

AL PITCHER: DANGER MOUTH (UK/NZ) at The Transmission Room
reviewed by Sian Robertson 20 Apr 2008
Infectious amusement at smallest, oddest things
The theme of the show is Pitcher’s observations of weird people and random events that you can witness, anywhere in the world, if you’ve got the time and inclination. He’s especially fond of urban nutters. [more]

CADBURY CRUNCHIE COMEDY GALA at Civic Theatre
reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 20 Apr 2008
Top night all round
The Gala has a new home. It’s moved from the loveable grunge of the St James, across the road to the luxury and comfort of the Mighty Civic. Would the heart remain now that it looks so neat and tidy, so grown up and posh? Hell yes. [more]

LOSER at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge
reviewed by Hap Richardson 17 Apr 2008
Doubled over at dark humour
The opening scene sets the tone for the piece. Liz a social outcast is about to jump to her death. She hears a Greek chorus of students below, yelling something: “Jump Jump Jump …” A teacher interrupts the group. Perhaps he will be her saviour. He joins the chorus: “Jump Jump Jump …” [more]

THE STORM at Lyall Bay Surf Club
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 16 Apr 2008
Fast furious theatre
Occasionally a theatre company arrives out of the blue and simply blows you away. Enter stage left, multi 2008 Fringe Festival award winners, Three Spoon Theatre. This is just their second production after the aforementioned Fringe hit, which I missed but can’t wait to see its encore season at Downstage next month. [more]

T H E S I N G U L A R I T Y at BATS
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 16 Apr 2008
Singular piece of theatre
The Singularity is a singularly tricky piece of theatre to review. It’s a work enjoyed more after seeing it, when you can put the many fractured pieces of information together to make sense of the whole. While you’re watching, you’re just too busy trying to keep up to relax and enjoy the work. And that’s not a criticism, it’s a pleasure to be treated as an intelligent and questioning theatre goer. THE WOODS AND REUNION at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Nik Smythe 15 Apr 2008
Gritty sociological exposition
The Woods is the tale of a cold, wet night and morning after , shared between Nick and Ruth ... Reunion opens appropriately with the sardonic crushed-idealism rantings of William Burroughs, as Bernie clumsily ties his black tie in anticipation of the arrival of his daughter Carol, coming to visit him for the first time in twenty years.
