![]() MEN OF STEEL at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 30 Apr 2008 |
Biscuit cutters climb the food chain If you are looking for a Comedy Festival show to expand your kids’ experience of live theatre by questioning their sensibilities and logic, then go to Men Of Steel. It’s not pretty and it’s not subtle, but it is pleasingly different and wonderfully messy. [more] |
![]() RUBBER TURKEY at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave reviewed by Sian Robertson 30 Apr 2008 |
Darkly witty, superbly constructed Rubber Turkey is a slit-your-wrists-sharp comedy about comedy that tickles your cerebral cortex as well as your funny bone. Actually, I can’t tell if it’s a tragedy masquerading as a comedy or the other way around. “All the best comedy is born of tragedy” (and vice versa), explains Guy (Alex Grieg) – I guess therein lies my answer. ![]() MARK WATSON: CAN I BRIEFLY TALK TO YOU ABOUT THE POINT OF LIFE? (UK) at Crunchie Comedy Chamber, Town Hall reviewed by Jessie Kollen 30 Apr 2008 |

![]() COHEN HOLLOWAY’S HYPNOTASTIC TOUR 2008 at BATS reviewed by John Smythe 30 Apr 2008 |
You have to be there This is another seriously crazy piece of theatre from Out Of Bounds, who brought us Brain Power (Fringe ’07) and Footballistic (Dance Your Socks Off ’07). The format is a hypnotism show and a hard-working team of black-clad puppeteers ingeniously evokes the bizzare fantasies of supposed members of the public planted in the audience. [more] |
![]() KEVIN GILLESE AND ARLEN KONOPAKI: SCRATCH (CANADA) at The Transmission Room reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 30 Apr 2008 |
Missed their end more than once Scratch is a two-man Improv. team from Canada. Their show is totally devised, made up on the spot, using suggestions given from the audience at the top of the night. Sound familiar? It is. [more] |
![]() THE LADY BUNCH at BATS reviewed by John Smythe 30 Apr 2008 |
An excellent combo Lined up like Russian Dolls (size-wise), The Lady Bunch introduce themselves and each other with a blend of great harmonies and dire doggerel lyrics, before splitting off for their solo standup turns. [more] |
![]() RUBBER TURKEY at BATS reviewed by Lynn Freeman 30 Apr 2008 |
Chicken little There are six main types of laughter, a man in a chicken suit explains at the start of Rubber Turkey – starting at the snicker. The chicken should know, being associated with one of the oldest jokes in the canon. Rather than revelling in the fame, he spends the play trying to end it all. [more] |

NZ International Comedy Festival LINDAUER COMEDY DIVAS 08 at Crunchie Comedy Chamber, Town Hall reviewed by Nik Smythe 29 Apr 2008 |
Viva la Divas! Apparently, according to the insightful research of one Christopher Hichens, women don’t know how to be funny, being simply not genetically disposed to it. So it stands to reason emcee (Mistress of ceremonies? Madam perhaps? ...) Michelle A’Court wanted to call this show ‘The Christopher Hichens Memorial Women’s Comedy Showcase’. [more] |

The vibe of a friendly fun fight This marks the first show of the Theatresports™ Season run by the prodigious ‘The Improvisors’. A full house at Circa Two cheered, suggested and guffawed their little hearts out. [more] |
