KEEP IT RURAL at BATS reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 27 Feb 2009 |
Funny tales on the farm Two solo pieces (you’ve guessed it - from last year’s Toi Whakaari’s solo season) and a new two-hander are three short entertaining light comedies that make up Keep it Rural. [more] |
![]() WOLF’S LAIR at BATS reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 2 Mar 2009 |
Life at the heart of the evil empire Wolf’s Lair is a 40-minute fractured portrait and monologue, beautifully performed by Sophie Roberts, about the “unspectacular life” of a very ordinary woman who found herself in 1942 at the age of 22 working in Wolfsschanze (Wolf’s Lair), Hitler’s headquarters. ![]() POST GAY at BATS reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 2 Mar 2009 |
Limited abilities Post Gay is a shallow, flaccid comedy about Matthew (Todd Morgan) who is egged on by his flatmate Cecilia (Natasha Ross) to try internet dating in the hope of ending the drought that is his sex life. Though why Matthew should take any notice of Cecilia is hard to fathom as she has no success with the creep of a man in her life. [more] |

Engaging searches for enlightenment Buddha Boy largely takes place in another realm, that being the only logical place the two protagonists could meet. [more] |

THE SKYROCKETEERS OF JUSTICE VS THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE at BATS reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 18 Feb 2009 |
Promise fizzles The Skyrocketeers…..continues the Fringe tradition of flat-based plays, a logical starting point for young writers. The point of difference with this one being the flat was surrounded by Zombies. [more] |
![]() POLY-ZYGOTIC at BATS reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 25 Feb 2009 |
An enjoyable way to spend an hour Poly-Zygotic is a gentle romp, where non-identical triplets work on a routine for the local talent show. But the competition is intense and as well as looking different, the three have contrasting personalities. [more] |

WORDS APART at BATS reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 25 Feb 2009 |
Engrossing drama, fringe at its best Words Apart was, in what’s believed to be a NZ first, sign language and English. As with Polyzygotic, it’s a bit like tuning in to Shakespeare; once you let your mind relax and not get uptight about not understanding every word but rely more on the actions, you get it. [more] |
![]() THE FROGS UNDER THE WATERFRONT at Meet at Mac's Brewery reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 25 Feb 2009 |
Cast meet challenge like ducks to water If any show epitomizes the best of a Fringe festival, it’s Frogs. That it sold out pretty much before it opened is a testament to a brilliant concept. That people all over town are talking about it and those who missed out are thrilled at the news it’s having a return season next month, is a testament to the fact the show fulfils its promise. ![]() A MOST OUTRAGEOUS HUMBUG at Waimapihi Reserve, end of Holloway Road, Aro Valley reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 25 Feb 2009 |
Memorable theatre on many levels A Most Outrageous Humbug is an eerie look at the seemingly cursed life of writer Edgar Allan Poe. The cast and director devised the play and set it in a setting that’s perfect – isolated from the world, disquieting, seemingly abandoned. [more] |

NZ Fringe Festival 09 IMPROV - THE SECONDARY SCHOOL MUSICAL at Circa Two reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 25 Feb 2009 |
Remarkable crafting The Improvisers take the well traversed high school musical genre and turn it not only on its head but inside out and give it a good shake. This has more in common with the brilliant scathing Aussie comedy set in a high school, its name escapes me, but subversion was the name of the game as it is here. [more] |
