Greater clarity and polish in cheery hour of cultural stereotyping Poly-Zygotic opens with the same energy and confidence as we witnessed at its Bats Fringe debut. The actors are grounded and gain instant laughs from the audience. The simple set performs much the same function in the space of Downstage as it did in the smaller theatre space across the road, and we are once more taken into a familiar setting of sibling rivalry, comedic banter and outrageous showing off, Newtown-Samoa style. A memorable work of theatrical art An essay in the nature of lust, love, marriage and jealousy from a very male perspective, performed by an actor, dancer, six musicians and a video artist, The Kreutzer could well be subtitled Fear and (Self-) Loathing in Russian Wedlock. As the second of the year’s STAB season offerings at BATS, it offers a rich, absorbing and provocative 70 minutes of theatre. [more] |

Two good acts in search of a third It’s a great, if rather impractical idea: seat your audience at computer monitors in a set-up that vaguely resembles an open plan office, then share the contents of the titular Office Boy’s screen as he, Darren Sanders, works through the first hour of a morning from hell at Crenshaw Toilet Seats. RUBY TUESDAY at BATS reviewed by John Smythe 3 Mar 2010 |

Achingly funny and tragic We’re back to school from the moment we walk into the auditorium. Nigel Dungaree (Josephine Stewart-Tewhiu) the science teacher and CD (Isla Adamson) the phys-ed teacher are on duty and handing out detention slips to miscreants. [more] |

Remarkable – and enthralling In 1890 Moscow when Tolstoy’s sensational story The Kreutzer Sonata was first circulated before the Tsar’s censors got hold of it, Muscovites greeted each other with not “How do you do?” but with “Have you read The Kreutzer Sonata?” The same could well apply here: Have you seen The Kreutzer at Bats? Comedy set in school ends in tragedy Don’t throw paper darts (despite the illustrated instructions in the programme on how to make one) and don’t arrive late for Ruby Tuesday or you’ll be threatened with detention by the fierce phys-ed teacher who doesn’t accept period pains and non-regulation shoes as excuses to avoid her classes. Highly original, multi layered work The Kreutzer is elegant, seductive, disturbing and beautiful, all in one. The central story, the confession of a man who murdered his wife is repelling, the Beethoven and Janacek music performed live on stage, with the musicians haunting and taunting the man, burrows right into your soul. Passionate Barbarian breaks fourth wall Whether you gravitate to Randerson’s symbolic references to nihilism, existentialism, Grotowski’s ‘Theatre of the Poor’, or Theatre of the absurd (where it is the playwright’s job to articulate that life is inherently without meaning); or whether you simply like humorous statements, you’ll certainly enjoy Mapp-Borren’s wide enthusiasm and forceful, entertaining performance. Raunchy yet dignified It seems to me that this kind of show is a viable dating experience for open minded couples… in fact the door staff seemed surprised I was there alone and I felt the need to explain I’m the critic so they wouldn’t think I’m just sad, quite possibly actually confirming the reverse… [more] |
