GOOD ANGEL, BAD ANGEL at Gryphon
reviewed by Pepe Becker 2 Apr 2008
Excellently crafted and performed intimate chamber opera
I have only good things to say about this show ... Its perfect combination of elements – music, libretto, performers, production and venue – gives the audience an experience every bit as satisfying as some of the best international acts have to offer. [more]

HOTEL at Museum Hotel - return season
reviewed by John Smythe 2 Apr 2008
Perving on private lives
Hotel is just as absorbing on a second viewing; the casting changes add slightly different colourings, and some overlaps and synchronicities seem more ingenious and stylish ... [more]

MOONLIGHT & MAGNOLIAS at Fortune Theatre
reviewed by Barbara Frame (Otago Daily Times) 2 Apr 2008
Frankly my dear, it’s a great play
... Murray Lynch’s snappy direction brings out excellent characterisation. Julian Wilson is all focused determination as Selznick, Matt Wilson’s Fleming is both suave and abrasive, and Anna Henare exploits the comic possibilities of Miss Poppenghaul, Selznick’s secretary, to the limit. [more]

MARILYN: FOREVER BLONDE at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 2 Apr 2008
Charming Marilyn
Poor Marilyn Monroe – desperate to be taken seriously as an actress yet held captive by the male fantasy stereotype she created to find fame. Like a candle in the wind, indeed. [more]

MAN OF LA MANCHA at Centrepoint
reviewed by Peter Hawes 1 Apr 2008
“Thank gOD for the best play I’ve seen in years.”
Definition 3 of MAGIC (n) in my Collins Dictionary runs thus: `The practice of illusory tricks to entertain other people’. Well, wonderful illusions are being created by puppeteers at Centrepoint Theatre. And people in Palmerston North are being hugely entertained. [more]

Humour and pace replace novel irony and ambiguity
Auckland Theatre Company's adaptation of Sia Figiel's acclaimed novel takes us on a roller-coaster ride through Samoan village life in the 1970s. [more]

Dunedin Fringe
THE LAST ANTIGONE at Globe Theatre
reviewed by Terry MacTavish 31 Mar 2008
Timely reworking of timeless tale
It is certainly a fine augury for Dunedin’s 2008 Fringe Festival that the first production I’ve seen should be a thing of real beauty, bringing together the talents of some boldly creative artists in a work that delights the senses while engaging the mind. [more]

WHERE WE ONCE BELONGED at Concert Chamber - Town Hall, THE EDGE
reviewed by Sian Robertson 30 Mar 2008
The discomfort of change: moving and funny
... The tradition of storytelling is a distinct thread that runs through the play, opening with a creation myth to which Alofa, the central character, listens intently, before launching into her own narrative. Joy Vaele is the clearest speaker – which is fortunate because she plays Alofa who narrates, as the play unfolds, the story of her mother (also played by Vaele) and her own story growing up. [more]

FAUST CHROMA + ENIGMA EMMY GöRING AND NICO SPHINX at Niebelheim, Christchurch Arts Centre
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 30 Mar 2008
Startling productions with two faces
For students of contemporary theatre and indeed anyone seriously prepared to step aside from conventional performance work, these pieces are an interesting prospect. They are not for everyone but neither do they give off the whiff of indulgence sometimes associated with non-commercial productions. [more]
