NZ Fringe Festival 08
ENGAGED at Michael Fowler Centre Foyer, Ladies Toilets
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 27 Feb 2008
Intriguing, unnerving and voyeuristic
We’ve been to Fringe shows in a lingerie shop, a Laundromat, travel agent’s, cafes, central city office – it was only a matter of time until we were ushered into a toilet. [more]

SENSIBLE SUSAN & THE QUEEN'S MERKIN: A MORALITY PLAY at BATS
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 27 Feb 2008
A sheer pleasure to watch
Sensible Susan and the Queen’s Mirkin, directed by Rachel Lenart and the sixth and latest mind-bending offering from Theatre Militia, is the show to beat all Fringe shows this year, so far at least. [more]

STEP UP DARLINGS, IT’S TEN-IN-ONE! at BATS
reviewed by Lynn Freeman 27 Feb 2008
Flair and guts
Step up Darlings is….well it’s…..how can I best describe it….the three women…..you see they…. OK, it’s not that baffling but it is different, in your face and hard to sum up. [more]

BLACK WATCH at TSB Bank Arena, Queens Wharf
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 27 Feb 2008
Loved it
There’s always a danger when a show arrives from overseas hyped to the max, that won’t deliver. Black Watch, when you read the overseas reviews, is one of the shows of the moment. It is based on the Scottish Regiment Black Watch, a potted history though mainly set in Iraq as ex-soldiers talk about their experiences there. [more]

THREE SISTERS at Opera House
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 27 Feb 2008
Just delicious
Three hours of Chekhov, in Russian, with surtitles, qualifies as an epic for cast and audience. Director Declan Donnellan and his just extraordinary cast understand Chekhov, when the characters talk of suffering you know Russians speak from experience. [more]

BLACKBIRD at Shed 6, Queens Wharf

Well (but not brilliantly) done
All the attention on this Sydney Theatre Company production of Blackbird, has rested on the shoulders of the director, Cate Blanchett. [more]

WHO WANTS TO BE 100? (ANYONE WHO’S 99) at Circa One
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 27 Feb 2008
Hall fans won’t be disappointed
Who Wants to be 100, this story about four old codgers in a rest home, really resonated with the audience, which is what Roger Hall does better than anyone. [more]

LA VIE at Pacific Blue Festival Club
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 27 Feb 2008
Wonderful acts
This is part-cabaret, part-burlesque, part circus and being designed for the late night audience, very naughty in places. [more]

ZARATHUSTRA SAID at Happy (Cnr Tory & Vivian)
reviewed by Melody Nixon (The Lumiere Reader) 27 Feb 2008
Colourful, side-show like spectacle
First performed as a graduate piece at WPAC, director Lilicherie McGregor and cast have moved the production to the moody space of Happy for two nights only, this week. Together with the revelling accompaniments of ‘Fertility Festival’ – musicians Gerard Crewdson, Warwick Donald and the fabulous Jeff Henderson – the show provides a wild melange of morality, hedonism, Christianity and poetry, all with a suitably avant-garde twist. BLINKERS at BATS
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 26 Feb 2008
Human nature and equine obsession
In what must be one of the stand out Fringe Festival shows so far, two 2007 Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School graduates perform a piece they have devised together under the excellent direction of another of their class mates Sophie Roberts. [more]
