Stimulating contrasts
Zahra and Alysha present a dynamic and intriguing duet that explores the roles of control and dictatorship within society and how it affects either the recipient or the authoritative self. [more]

THE MOON’S INSANE AND OTHER STORIES at The Wine Cellar, St Kevins Arcade (K Rd)
reviewed by Jacob Tamaiparea 20 Mar 2009
Carried away by charming nonsensical momentum
The Moon's Insane and other stories is an offering from dusty literatures; a reading from a book of nightmares told through a display of creepy, disconnected movement and read-aloud storytelling. [more]

THE NEEDIES at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Sian Robertson (2) 22 Apr 2009
You may find in discomforting, disgusting, sick-making as well as funny and thought-provoking
I reviewed the premiere of The Needies last month in the Auckland Fringe Festival (click here to read it), so I won’t go into the story at length. This new season has one cast change – the female lead is played by Isla Adamson – and a new director, Abigail Greenwood. It has moved from Cross Street Studios to The Basement ... [more]

GESTALT at TAPAC Theatre, Western Springs
reviewed by Nik Smythe (2) 4 Aug 2009
Geekville revisited
The whole story is about things being greater than the sum of their parts, i.e. gestalt, with a measure of things being other than they seem plus a liberal helping of gratuitous romantic idealism. [more]

THE KREUTZER at Great Hall, The Arts Centre
reviewed by Tony Ryan 7 Aug 2009
Inspirational for music enthusiasts and theatre-goers alike
This adaptation, as devised by Peter Barber and Sarah Brodie, is a dramatisation of Tolstoy’s story with several telling and perceptive modifications that enable the musical works to play a significant part in the drama. [more]

THE HEIGHT OF THE EIFFEL TOWER at 4th Street Theatre, Manhattan
reviewed by Kate McGill 16 Aug 2010
The height of good theatre: this show is a joy
Morgana O’Reilly displays wonderful artistry; effortlessly morphing from character to character with vocal dexterity, physical panache and specificity. She and Abigail Greenwood have orchestrated a tight show that wonderfully intercuts full-blown belly laughs with softer, more intimate moments. [more]

Vivid imagery and humour
The Arrival is a stand-out physical theatre production of exquisite visual artistry and astonishing ensemble work performed to a visceral soundscore. It has – and will – grace festival stages around the world and is not to be missed. [more]

THE ARRIVAL at Opera House
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 17 Mar 2010
Poignant, full of feeling, often unnerving
The Arrival, honed and polished after its Auckland Festival premiere and some overseas appearances, shows just what New Zealand theatre practitioners can do when given the chance and a decent budget. [more]

THE ARRIVAL at Opera House
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 12 Mar 2010
Simple story told with captivating imagination
Every immigrant’s nightmare: arriving in a new country faced with a strange new language, people and customs and the highs and lows of dealing with all this strangeness. [more]

NOSTALGIA – ISHINHA (JAPAN) at ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre
reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 12 Mar 2009
Less than the sum of its extraordinary parts
NOSTALGIA is a grand marathon 2-hour performance by Japan’s highly regarded Ishinha theatre company. It is the first part of a trilogy [which] symbolises the history of the 20th century in part by using a 4-metre high giant to show how ‘fat’ mankind has become in many regards. A timely resonance given the role greed has played in the current global economic downturn. [more]
