Colourful, side-show like spectacle First performed as a graduate piece at WPAC, director Lilicherie McGregor and cast have moved the production to the moody space of Happy for two nights only, this week. Together with the revelling accompaniments of ‘Fertility Festival’ – musicians Gerard Crewdson, Warwick Donald and the fabulous Jeff Henderson – the show provides a wild melange of morality, hedonism, Christianity and poetry, all with a suitably avant-garde twist. Human nature and equine obsession In what must be one of the stand out Fringe Festival shows so far, two 2007 Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School graduates perform a piece they have devised together under the excellent direction of another of their class mates Sophie Roberts. [more] |

Way-out wacky yet awfully familiar ... Separate sequences clearly establish who they are and what they do, paying little attention to back-stories that might explain why. They just are: contemporary clown-like entities, recognisably real but with specific characteristics separated, distilled then magnified to absurdist levels where interest, fascination and passion have crossed the line to obsession. Ensemble cast of stars creates a galaxy of images This work raises the benchmark locally for performances that explore the elusive interface between dance and text. It is a testament to the commitment of Malia Johnston and Emma Willis to marry the two. They have masterminded the invention of a unique world. [more] |

Slightly nerdy dead people: rough and less than ready Whether you’re coming to watch the show or just an ordinary punter sloping in for a beer, the ‘Kooky Commotion’ begins as you ascend the stairwell to The Mighty Mighty Bar. Veiled figures moan in a spooky but oddly musical fashion as you pass. [more] |

Sinks into melodrama Over written and lacking the originality and creativity of the former production, Charlie, written and directed by Fleur Fitzpatrick, is based on the Charles Manson syndrome, the power an individual can have over another to the point of doing anything for that person, even murder. Charming vignette This is a play of many debuts. Both actors, Natalie Medlock and Dan Musgrove, graduated from Toi Whakaari in 2007 and this is their first professional performance. They also devised and wrote the piece. The director, Sophie Roberts, is having her first outing in this guise ... [more] |

A different kind of master for the ring When you see Cirque Ici – and you must – be prepared to leave all your expectations of what a circus should be, at the door. If you do, you will enter a realm of magic hitherto unknown, and you will be amazed once again, at the wonder of the world and its beings. [more] |

Darkly exquisite, truly astounding If this is Purgatory or Hell or the existential state of Nothingness, book me in – as long as I can just watch and don’t have to do what these French Canadian acrobatic contortionists do. Mind you, we are all dead – that’s the premise from the opening roll call – so where’s the harm in taking the odd mortal risk? And odd their activities certainly are. [more] |
