THE LADY BUNCH at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 30 Apr 2008
An excellent combo
Lined up like Russian Dolls (size-wise), The Lady Bunch introduce themselves and each other with a blend of great harmonies and dire doggerel lyrics, before splitting off for their solo standup turns. [more]

THE LARAMIE PROJECT at Wesley Church Old Hall, 75 Taranaki St

Consistent ensemble work makes for great theatre
It should be fairly well known by now that Long Cloud Youth Theatre, under the direction of Willem Wassenaar, is not in the habit of shying away from challenges or difficult projects. Their production of The Laramie Project ... is no exception. [more]

THE LARAMIE PROJECT: 10 YEARS LATER at BATS

High drama: facing up
It is, of course, not a comedy, though it’s not without humour, but an account by a theatre troupe returning to Laramie, Wyoming to discover what changes had occurred in the community ten years after the brutal murder of a young gay man, Matthew Shepard, in 1998. [more]

THE LARAMIE PROJECT: 10 YEARS LATER at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave

Thought-provoking, engaging; performed with rigour, class, dignity and pride
And this is the area that the production excels in the most: clarity. From the busy, frantic movements, through focussed accents and dialogue, to perfect shifts of tone and locale, this incisive staging manages to keep us engaged and alert to the issues, characters and ideas at the play’s core. Excellent ensemble meets important challenge head-on
American company, Tectonic Theatre Project, presents a style of work known as verbatim theatre. Verbatim is created by interviewing individuals, recording their words and presenting precisely (hence the name) their stories and testimonies on stage for an audience; a form of documentary theatre. Aged Perfectly
How do you measure change? This is one of the questions that drove the Tectonic Theater Project to revisit the town of Laramie, Wyoming, ten years after their incredibly successful theatrical project. It is an important question, especially regarding the content of the play, and after seeing Alacrity Productions’ version of The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later I am not only relieved, but also grateful, that this play has been put in the hands of such dedicated practitioners. THE LAST 5 YEARS at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 17 May 2008
Engaging insights and intrigue
Cleverly constructed, and inspired by the breakup of his own first marriage,* Jason Robert Brown’s The Last 5 Years covers the time frame in question, first in a waltzing ‘dumbshow’ prologue, then in song, from opposite ends. [more]

Musical marriage needs theatricality
Like the old Broadway musicals I Do! I Do! and They’re Playing Our Song, The Last 5 Years is a musical two-hander about a couple’s relationship which, unlike the I Do! I Do! couples’ marriage that lasted fifty years, lasts only five. But like They’re Playing Our Song it is about a troubled relationship. It is told in fourteen sung-through scenes. [more]

THE LAST 5 YEARS at BATS

Love lacking
It starts off as fairly trad musical fare, boy meets girl, they fall in love, get married, live happily (and this is where it veers off the path most trodden) for a while then it all falls apart. Jamie and Cathy started off with such promise, he as an aspiring and talented young writer, she as a singer looking for her big break. As his career rockets away, she struggles with life in the suburbs and his rapidly expanding ego. [more]

Dunedin Fringe
THE LAST ANTIGONE at Globe Theatre
reviewed by Terry MacTavish 31 Mar 2008
Timely reworking of timeless tale
It is certainly a fine augury for Dunedin’s 2008 Fringe Festival that the first production I’ve seen should be a thing of real beauty, bringing together the talents of some boldly creative artists in a work that delights the senses while engaging the mind. [more]
