The Compleate Workes Project
PERICLES at Studio 77, VUW
reviewed by Helen Sims 8 Oct 2009
Oriental theatre traditions bring clarity to convoluted plot
The students of the THEA303 course at Victoria University have obviously been very hard at work. Their Asian-theatre “inspired” production of Pericles is an entertaining and thoughtful production that harnesses elements of Chinese and Japanese traditional theatre forms without sacrificing the story. VIENNA VERONA at BATS

A step up
Before we tread into the nitty grit of what exactly did and didn’t work, it needs to be said that Vienna Verona is an achievement. It is a step up. [more]

Mongrel play
The ultimate love story is also extremely violent and at times extremely grubby. There are some delicious touches to McCubbin Howell and his cast’s fast and furious production, where switchblades double for rapiers and the Capulet and Montague gangs spray graffiti. [more]

KING RICHARD THE SECOND at Studio 77, VUW
reviewed by Peter Manglethwaite (Salient) 20 Jul 2009
Intriguing to watch
The New Zealand premiere of one of Shakespeare’s lesser-known history plays, Richard II was transported from a court setting to a circus tent, giving me the feeling that I was watching two plays, with the common theme of threatened leadership. [more]

TE KARAKIA at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge
reviewed by Janet McAllister (New Zealand Herald) 6 Mar 2009
“They got me: I cried”
“They got me: I cried” If there's a genre that local playwrights – usually Maori – have made their own, it's high-tension family drama. They deal with potentially deathly topics like cultural identity and land politics in a compelling way, calculated to leave no dry eye in the house. [more]

TE KARAKIA at Blak Dramatics

Festival highlight keeps audience spellbound
... Te Karakia, left me again feeling that this company is making a wonderful job of mastering the fragile art that is theatre. Festivals in the bush need a very special type of theatrical style and design to succeed in a big muddy tent, away from the comforts of the modern high tech theatrical environment. [more]

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM at Town Hall
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 25 Jul 2009
A magical presentation
On rare occasions ... it is possible to have one's cake and eat it too. In this case the feast was for eye and ear; a cornucopia of beautiful music, Shakespeare spoken with intelligent feeling, visual delights and of course the interwoven stories of fairy and mortal in the theatre world's favourite Dream. THE GREAT GATSBY at Court One
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 26 Jul 2009
The shell of alienation cracked
The work for stage must, of course, be viewed in its own right and the play experienced as if we had never heard of Daisy and Jay or their trashy ways. Certainly a production of Ken Duncum’s adaptation demands a rational approach so that we are never in danger of falling under the hypnotic spell of the hedonistic world of the novel. [more]

ONCE AND FOR ALL WE’RE GONNA TELL YOU WHO WE ARE SO SHUT UP AND LISTEN at St Margaret's College Chapel
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 1 Aug 2009
Battering spontaneity pushes boundaries
Its unmistakably in-yer-face creation and recreation of adolescence is hectically physical and at the same time curiously innocent of the compromises age and the world have in store. The result is a brutally immediate piece of work that is not without poignancy if you are over, say, twenty. [more]

LOVE YOU APPROXIMATELY at Centre of Contemporary Art: CoCA
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 1 Aug 2009
Redefining what the shared experience of theatre might involve
The clinic in action is proof that there is no limit to creative collaboration. This piece blends film from Spain and New Zealand, the live performer at CoCA and liberal use of webcam, e-mail and texting to advance the story. Scriptwriter Lucette Hindin and director Julieanne Eason have achieved a meticulous composite. [more]
